Third gobbler of the season (PIC)
I had hunted this place twice before during this season. Both times the gobbling activity was on the left side of the property and I was on the right. OK---so I go to the left side this morning and heard nothing till surise. Guess where I heard the gobbling? The right side of course.
Had a jake fly down in my lap (closer than 10 yards) and then 3 others flew down. They strolled on off and I decided to stay put. I sat and clucked every now and then for 2 hours. Nothing.
I decided to ease through a finger of woods on the other side of the propery to look at another big opening. I spotted the jakes but then heard a gobbler on top of the hill. I clucked and the gobbler answered. I thought I was in business---but a few minutes later he gobbled again and was obviously further away.
I went back into this finger of hardwoods which was also like a big gully with a small drainage creek running through it. I was going to walk through the woods up the hill and see if I could spot the TOM. When I eased out of the woods thinking the gobbler was well to my left---I saw a fan on top of the ridge 30 yards in front of me and then another gobbler head and neck. I thought I was busted for sure. I dropped to my knees to get my shotgun ready. I heard him gobble. I eased up and still saw the fan---and then saw the other head and neck again. I decided to take him instead of calling or waiting for the dominant bird to really show himself. One thing I have learned is when you have a shot---you best take it.

Way to go Sour01!! You' re havin' yourself a pretty darn good season down there in ' Bama! Congratulations guy! I wish we had Alabama' s liberal bag limits here in Missouri. We can only take 2 birdsbut that is 1 more than some states allow so we are lucky in that respect. Hope you find time to get out and get another biggun' before that dreadful day called " End of Season" !
