Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Mossberg 835

I was wondering if a mossberg 835 camo thumbhole stock with a 20" barrel on it is a good buy for $299.99. The only thing im worried about is the barrel length. Is it long enough?

Yes it is long enough....some would say a perfect size for a turkey gun.
If you are planning on shooting heavier than lead loads you will need a new choke tube since the factory one is not rated for it. If you are shooting lead you will be fine. I have gotten excellent results with an Indian Creek, and Hevi-13 3" 2oz #6, or Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #6.

I posted this same reply in the guns forum.

I have an 835 with a 20" barrel. I got it to pattern pretty good with a jelly head choke and 2.25 oz 3.5" #6 hevi-13s. Its a standard stock and it kicks like a mule. The Sims limbsaver pad helps a lot. Its nice having a short barrel. My other gun has a 28" barrel and with an extended turkey choke, it was a pain to use for turkey hunting.

Take a look at the "How to PatternA Turkey Gun" Thread on this page.... bottom of the first post is my 835. 20" is plenty long enough.

The 835 is an awesome gun. A close personal friend has one of the older Mossberg 835ultra mags with the longer ported barrel, and a newer with the short barrel and thumbhole stock and loves it. I still have the older model without the ports....and damn it kicks! [&:]

But to answer your question...you'll love the 20" barrel and thumbhole stock.

Dcnoble, I have the same exact gun and I paid $360 for it. I absolutely love it and would HIGHLY recommend buying it. I bought the gun and topped it off with a bushnell 4power shotgun scope and that set up is lethal. The factory choke patterns well with winchester #5. I shoot 3 1/2's. You won't be dissappointed. I got the gun two years ago and since i ve bought it I haven't missed a bird...... knock on wood. Let me know if you have any questions about it.
