RE: Patterning rssults
Strut, if your looking for Nitro results all you have to do is shoot #7' s. Matter of fact, i saw a Remington #7 Hevi shot load last time i was at Bass Pro. There is no magic to these loads. Just stuff a shell full of birdshot and put a hot charge behind it.

RE: Patterning rssults
Gobblenut I' m not talking about the # of shot, I' m talking the size of the pattern, The Nitro' s was at least a foot smaller overall at 40 yards than the Winchesters was.

RE: Patterning rssults
Man, i' m not razzing you for what you use. I' m just saying when you push a load of #7' s through a .655 choke your going to get those results. I too have been tempted to go the Nitro route, but evey time i consider it i am reminded by the turks that have fallen to over-the-counter loads at yardages from 10-40+.

RE: Patterning rssults
I did' nt take it that you were razzing me, I' m just very pleased with my pattern from the Nitro ammo. The Nitro' s are not just #7' s they are 4x5x7, and looked like about half of them were 4' s and 5' s, and it looks like that the 7 hevi-shot has just about as much stopping power as a 6 lead shot has, they do penetrate deeper than a 5 or 6 lead shot at 40 yards.

RE: Patterning rssults
Stut - I have one question about the Nitro Hevi-Shot 7' s and it sounds like you have some info on them. I am not sure I understand what Nitro is saying about the 7' s penetrating. Are saying that even though the Hevi-Shot 7' s carry less energy than lead 5' s at 40 yards, the 7' s are smaller (in diameter), and will still penetrate the skin? I know lead #5' s will penetrate all the way to the vitals at 40 yards, so it would make more sense to me if they said the Hevi-Shot 7' s will penetrate farther than lead #7' s rather than lead # 5' s.
With that said, just breaking the skin with pellets is not enough to put a turkey down. If the Hevi-Shot 7' s do not carry enough energy to break the neck and skull of a turkey at 40 yards, all they will do is cause superficial tissue damage. I understand the Nitro load is also made up of 4' s and 5' s, but when people pattern their guns, they are assuming all of the pellets in the vitals will carry enough energy to be lethal. Otherwise, everyone would have to subtract off all of the #7' s holes from their patterns and just count the 4' s and 5' s. Does Nitro display any info on this anywhere? |
RE: Patterning rssults
My gun is a Rem. 870, the shells were 3 1/2 inch Winchester HV #4' s 2 oz. of shot.
The choke is a factory Rem. choke that measures .665 constriction. Wish I had a scanner to show the target but I don' t. I also bought a box of #6' s in the same load but can' t shoot them now because of all the snow we got yesterday.[:@] Honestly, I would rather hunt with the # 4' s anyway. |
RE: Patterning rssults
HHHMMMM, it just so happens that i too have the Rem Super Full .665 your speaking of, and a buddy of mine has a brand new box of three and a half HV fours he' s not shooting this year. I may have to have a last minute patterning session.
I pulled a quote from a thread elsewhere dealing with the pellet count of a Nitro shell. This guy patterned his gun extensively using some of Nitro' s loads. He would cut a shell open to get a pellet count so he could figure out percentages of shot in a 10 and 15 inch circle... " This was the Nitro load #H378, 3 inch, 1 7/8 oz., #4x5x7 Hevishot load with the same 2" extended Rhino choke with a .660 constriction. 40 yards. Nitro lists total pellets as 180 to 200. I counted 133 #4 copper pellets, 13 #5 copper pellets and 390 #7 Hevi-Shot pellets for a total of 553 pellets in the shell." So you can atleast see the basis for my comment in regards to loading up a shell with small shot, pushing it through super tight constrictions, and coming up with awesome patterns. It isn' t rocket science, or magic, just fundamental. |
RE: Patterning rssults
With the 7' s being smaller than the 5' s but still carrying about the same amount of foot pounds of energy as a 6 shot they will penetrate deeper, it does' nt take as much energy to penetrate a smaller shot as it does a larger shot. I have an e-mail they sent me somewhere if I can find it I will post it. Shoot at a piece of plywood At 40 yards and look at the difference between the 2.
Sure Gobblenutt, I see what you mean, I wish they made some hevi-shot #5' s or 6' s instead of these duplex loads. |
