Wooden calls produce better turkey sounds, simple as that. I' d rather have a custom wood call than a mass-produced plastic call. That doesn' t mean a production call won' t kill you turkeys. It' s all in what you want.
If you' re looking for an affordable call check out the Knight & Hale Ol Yeller, Quaker Boy Triple Threat, The M.A.D Super Aluminator or Aluminator 2, or the Primos Old Betsy and Old Glory.
As far as custom calls go, theres too many to mention here. Check out www.midwestturkeycall.com
My favorites are the Blodgett Tough Country slate and the Close Calls Double Trouble slate over slate.

I own a Knight & Hale Ol Yeller Sla-tek and love it, you hardly have to rough it up at all, and you can' t beat it for the price only around 20 bucks. As for a custom call I would recommend anything by Cody, they are great calls, I would try the Cody II or the Woodsman, both great calls in slate and glass.
