ORIGINAL: JW! But like anything else I wonder what new hype the shell manufacturers will come out with next. JW |
RE: 200 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards????
Maytom - bought several different Hevi-shot loads, still have them and yes tried them. Didn't care for the pattern out of my 11-87. Refused to pay more for a different choke tube as that what was probably needed.
Besides to me the selling point was killing power out past 50. So I ask why? I already have that. So I stuck with my load with a muzzle velocity of around 1300 fps. Provided the amount of killing - smack down energy needed at the range I choose to stay to. Each to their own - work great for you - fantastic! Good turkey hunters, like yourself, do look for the best possible way to make that 1st shot count. Hevi-shot gives you that confidence - then that is what counts. JW |
RE: 200 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards????
I have to agree completely with maytom here,
I had a forcing cone done on my 870 supermag and put a rhino .660 in it. I tried Remingtons Hevi-shot #6 and then finally got the Nitro loads. Wow is all I can say. Don't knock em unless you try them. |
RE: 200 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards????
ORIGINAL: JW! Great discussion - but I will stick with my Winchester Supremes #4s. It has the muzzle velocity and packs a punch better than the 5s or 6s I used in the past. Long ago my partner used the 4x6 load and could not understand why at about 28 yards he missed this turkey. Then it happened again and we immediatley went to a quick set up pattern board. To our amazement we found this load at a certain range gave him a hole in his pattern. I do beleive both boxes can still be found in the bottom of a cedar swamp in Mich!:) JW After reading all this I have some thought on a couple issue. Heavyshot is one size smaller then lead shot - so a #7 is a #6 in lead size. I have some of the 4x5x7 Nitro in a 3in 20 gauge. Maybe I would cut one and seperate the shot size and count and take photo's. Will that benefit this or am I just cutting up a $5.00 shell for nothing. I really don't use them anyway  UPDATE : Well I had to do it. I took a Nitro shell 20 gauge in a 4x5x7 and did the research and I think it will surprise you. Now I'm not doing this because I'm against nitro, only to see why so much difference. I will post the picture of my findings as soon as it loads... |
RE: 200 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards????
Well what I found was that the shot size was all different. The highest percentage was between 71/2 and 8 shot. The next size down was more like 6 shot and then it got bigger from there #5 and then 4#
I seperated all sizes as close as I could and counted. I was surprised as to how many shot where in total and what I see for numbers shot at 40 yards. I can understand that not every shell is the same but I can not see anymore then 12 more shot difference in all shells sold. The proof is in the pudding.... ![]() |
RE: 200 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards????
Well what I found was that the shot size was all different. The highest percentage was between 7 1/2 and 8 shot. The next size down was more like 6 shot and then it got bigger from there #5 and then 4# I seperated all sizes as close as I could and counted. I was surprised as to how many shot where in total and what I see for numbers shot at 40 yards. I can understand that not every shell is the same but I can not see anymore then 12 more shot difference in all shells sold. The proof is in the pudding.... I'm not sure I'm understanding the usefulness of the design? If the whole argument for this shell is that those small #7-8 pellets are sufficient to flip a gobbler at 40+ yards because they are "Hevi"then heck why not just load the whole shell with them and be done with it......... and up that total size pellet count to like 400 pellets and really get some shot in the air? Now quit screwing around andduct tapethat shell back together and pattern it for us into something at 40 yards and let us know if the little stuff bounces off. :D And Adrian, I just want to be clear on this statement because it seems a little "misstated" if I'm reading it correctly because you state that #7 Hevi is Smaller and the SAME size in one sentence: Heavyshot is one size smaller then lead shot - so a #7 is a #6 in lead size. In other words a #7 1/2 Hevishot will LOOK like a #7 1/2 in lead, it's just heavier and performs more like #6 lead? |
RE: 200 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards????
Okay Adrian - will keep my old shot quiet! :)
Hey good research! JW |
RE: 200 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards????
Heavyshot is one size smaller then lead shot - so a #7 is a #6 in lead size.
I think I should have said that heavy shot is one size smaller then the same size in lead. What I seen in this was that the 7 shot in the shell looked more like 7 1/2 or 8 shot.. LOL JW we still Love ya ! :D |
RE: 200 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards????
I gotta say I just don't understand the purpose of having ANY #7 or smaller (whatever shot size it really is) in a shell. My whole purpose of shooting top end loads and chokes is to extend my effective range on those 40-50 yard birds and I'm not convinced at all that this small shot that is the majority of the pattern is going to be effective at that range. I'm sure if you know your shots are going to be 20-30 yards that smaller shot is nice, but then again, I've never had aproblem dropping them in a heap at those ranges with bottom of the barrel turkey loads either.
Again, I'm willing to spend the money on premium stuff (my hevi loads were super expensive) but I'm not convinced on the Nitro stuff. Now if they had a straight hevi #6 load that would consistently put 240+ pellets in that circle out of a clean barrel it might be worth the money. |
RE: 200 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards????
They can make any load you desire. All they need is the phone call telling them to do so (and your money of course:D). I shot the 3.5" 4x5x7's this year and they worked when I did my part. I'm thinking next year I may have them make up some 3.5" straight 6's.
