when to call?!

Not quite sure on your first question? But your second one, find some birds, get permission, learn a couple of calls, watch some videos, get a bird and never stop learning after that. Good luck

Assuming you are on property that holds birds...
First, learn to use a box call, many birds were killed with these before the others ever came out...I also carry a slate and use diaphrams, but some folks make this sport too complicated...
Second, once he hears you, shut up...If you have to call, make it a few soft, contented purrs, I feel that a slate does this best...You can also rustle some leaves, like the hen is feeding...Many hunters continue to call and even get louder and louder when the gobbler is answering, for some reason they don't understand that he hears you now you have to persuade the bird to come in, louder calls won't do it...

Good info nchawk.. I've seen firsthand when people call more and more and louder and louder to an answering gobbler, and the gobbler will go literally the exact opposite way.. everytime.. If they'd just sit and wait.. he would pry come in.. thats good info..

Yup. NChawkeye has it right. Once you have him answering, many times shutting up or just a soft cluck, purr, or scratching the leaves will bring him in. Too much calling can be counter productive. Every bird is different tho, the longer you hunt them the more you'll learn. Good luck!

Use what's happening in the woods as a clue to your calling. Everyone else is spot on about not answering a gobbling turkey once he has heard you. The one time I will REALLY get aggressive is if there a lot of hens yelping. I've yelped back to hensso much and so often (to piss off a hen) that my hand has gotten sore (well, not quite, but you get the picture). More often than not,you can call in thehens doing thisand sometimes they bring boys with them.
I'mrarely that aggressive if calling to gobbler. For example, yesterday the woods were kind of quiet so I took to soft calling. A few clucks or purrs, maybe a three or four note yelp, every 15 minutes. I did that four times and then sat for 45 minutes quietlywhen a nice big mature gobbler sounded off one time. I clucked three times, that's it, and he came in. Due to my own stupidity I didn't get a shot, but that's a whole other story. LOL!
Good luck to you. Turkey hunting is an awesome time!
