Hey guys, I am thinking about getting into turkey hunting and was wondering what kind of gear I need to get started. I already have a Turkey gun and camo to use but after that, ive got nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't Do It! You'll be obsessed for life! Quit while you have the chance!!! Actually, all you really need is your gun, your camo (including mask and gloves), and a couple of calls. I'd start out with a slate type call. Alot of people will tell you box calls are the easiest, but I think a decent slate is easy and more versitile. Also, a mouth call is tough, but its good for hands free calling, I'd get one or two of those and practice practice practice. Get a CD and just try to get the basic sounds down. Thats all you need, but as you get into it you'll find a vest will help to carry all the stuff you're going to accumulate. Decoys, locator calls, more slates and boxes... Oh, I forgot... a THERMACELL to keep those skeeters and black flies away will help too! Read some of the old posts on here, theres a wealth of information. Good Luck this season!

Get a 21 pocket turkey vest and fill every pocket with gear.
2 Slate calls 4 or 5 Strikers
2 box calls
half a dozen diaphrams
pruners
t- paper
3 decoys
GPS
cell phone
2-4 extra shells ( just in case)
2 pair of camo gloves
2 face nets
Bug spray
Sun block
Water bottle
some type of granola bars
Packable rain gear
Some type of butt cushion, or stool
Now you just gotta decide what brand of all this stuff you want to buy.

well the first year i went out and had success all i brought with me was my gun my camo and my box call and a few turkey shells and also a decoy.I think a box is easy to learn on.I would go with the quaker boy hurricane i love it very simple. Then what i did was buy a turkey hunting movie and just listened to them call and tryed to mimic the noise they made. I would also get a mouth call and start practicing with that its tuff but you will get it down with practice.after that you can start buying your slates and more mouth calls and all that fun stuff that you have to have cause your addicted. eventually you will be buying calls not cause you need to have them but you just want them so bad. i find myself buying new calls every year cause i cant help my self.

Addiction, I believe there is a 12-step program for this as well. Gobblers Anonymous!

Also be sure to go with somebody who has been before. And just watch and learn.

Bow hunters make the best turkey hunters because they already know to sit still and when to move.
If you can call,dont call too much.If you can move in on him
move with caution. Dont adjust your aim untill he goes behind a tree. Pattern your gun before you go, and most of all be sure of the target be safe.

Your THINKING about getting into it?? You must GET INTO IT! You will not regret it. Trust me. I think you've gotten the "equipment" help already, so ill give you my best tip. Be extremely patient. Thats the best thing you can do.

As long as you are still "thinking" about getting into turkey hunting, there is still hope. Don't do it. Turkey hunting is more addictive than crystal meth, cocain, or pornography. There is no cure. There is no going back. I am still appealing Blue Cross/Blue Shield to see if they will cover the cost of turkey calls, decoys, and hunting trips...all necessary expensed to deal with this disease.

ccsd34, there is still hope. Try deer hunting. Get into water fowl hunting. They are safe. Whatever you do, do not go on a turkey hunt with someone who knows what they are doing... the results will change your life as you become an instant addict. Pray about making such a big decision before you go.

If you still don't head my warning. It may already betoo late. You might have caught the bug without even having been on a hunt. If that's the case, I am sorry....but then misery loves company. Welcome aboard!
