You can start right now. Watch em see where they go and what they do. Look for tracks, feathers,Scat, roost trees, strutting areas, loafing areas ,dusting areas.Always take note of when and where you see um.

I do all my scouting from a long distance. I set on the highest hills (You can hear best from open fields) at daylight and dark a couple of weeks before the season when they have claimed their territories are gobbling good. You can hear them for a half of mile or more. You get in the woods with them and you can't hear very far and you train them.
I stay out of the woods and don't care about droppings, loose feathers, scratchings or where they were before they claimed their territory.
I just want to know where they are going to be roosting on opening day and I will be there.

One thing also to remember is that turkey patterns will change as time goes by. The best time to really watch and take detailed notes is about two weeks before you season starts. You can definitely go out and start watching and observing now, but (from my experience) two weeks before the season starts seems to be the best time to really know where they are going to be the first day of the season.
