What gun do you use and why?
 

I am just curious about what shotgun you currently use for turkey hunting and why you made the choice. Sorry if this question has been asked ad nauseum but it'll be educational for me if you feel like answering.

If you have used other shotguns in the past or intend to use something else in the future I'd be interested to hear that also.

I am currently using a remington 870 SPS-T with thumbhole and I absolutely love it! The gun is so comfortable in the hands and it allows me the flexibility to shoot 3.5" shells. I use to have a Mossberg 835 ulti-mag that shot 3.5" shells, but I definitely like the Remington much better. Mossberg also has a thumbhole model shotgun in the 835 and if you like Mossberg guns, then I would look at one of those at your local sporting goods store. Of the two that I have mentioned, I prefer the Rem more. There must a reason why it is the most popular selling shotgun:)...

I have three I have used - one I will use no longer but is a back up
that is a Benelli SBG - 3.5 inch - 3.5 inch is overkill - don't need the 3.5 inch call the bird up close no reason for high priced shells

My main stay is a Remington 11-87 SP (Matte finish - no camo)- 21 inch barrel - Nikon scope - 3 inch - nice short barrel - patterns real nice using a hastings 0.663 turkey choke with winchester supreme #4

My putzer is a Pedroselli 10 Ga black Powder side by side. 100 gr Pyrodex powder, 1.5 oz #4 copper plated lead shot.

I shoot a Beretta Extrema with a 24" barrel in Realtree Hardwoods. It fits me really well. And it takes those turkey loads and reduces them to almost nothing! Yeah right!:D

Remington!!! just started out with a Rem and I bought 2 more... All 3 pattern great with one patterning awsome... That would be my SPT 3.5"

Ishoot an Ithica Mag 10 and have since 1980.User friendly it isnt,but I have some sentimental ties to this gun from a former friend.Besides that its a gobblers worst nightmare.More than one gobbler over the years has made the mistake of lookin down its long dark hole of a barrel to have one of my own handloads wack him upside his head.Everything on the gun is stock except fibre optic sites and my Butler Creek sling.The gun is heavy at 12lbs but is user friendly in the recoil of 3.5 loads.Shoots a very nice pattern at an average of about 82% inside a 30 inch circle at 30 yards.I shoot 2 1/8 ounces of #4 lead...:)...

works good enough for me:)

This year i may switch over to a Hoyt vectrix, hear it is pretty fun!

Benelli Supernova with the steadygrip and 24" barrell. 0 power scope.... #6 -3.5" Magnum heavishot load...because it's what I've got. I had a benelli nova with the 30" barrell. I sold it to a kid at my church because he wanted the longer barrell for dove hunting. I never did like that long barrell (no jokes, please:D).

I hunt with a Mossberg 500. Why I hunt with it is because It has the best pattern of any gun I have shot. I have an entended factory Turkey choke. I use Federal 3" magnum 2 oz load 5 shot. These pattern the best out of my gun and its deadly out to 50 yards. Max is 70 yards. I dont feel comfortable taking over a 50 yard shot. But not saying I wouldnt. Its an awesome shooting gun. I havent seen one out perform it...

I'm currently using a Browning BPSin Mossyoak camo...The NWTF Model...I chose this gun for it's top tang safety and bottom ejection which is perfect for me as a lefty...I also chose it for it's reputation of being a great shotgun...Using a Pure Gold Choke .670 choke tube and Winchester 3" #6 Xtended Range shells it will put 225 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards...;)

My first turkey gun was a Mossberg 500 that I sent to a gun smith and had it customized by having the 24" smooth bore slug barrel re-worked to take screw in choke tubes and the forcing cone lengthened...With a Hasting .660 choke tube it throws one incredible pattern it will punch a 2" hole at 20 yards and about a 6" hole at 40 yards...Very scary pattern!!!...I still have the gun as a back up.

Browning Gold Hunter is my main gun. Camo finish, 3", .12 ga, scoped. Use this one mostly for Easterns, where I sit and call mostly. I also use a T/C Encore camo finish12 ga with thumblehole stock for Merriams where I run-n-gun alot. The T/C is a lot lighter then the Browning, but it does pack a bit morekick to the shoulder!

Same here. I love this gun. It's a sweet looking and shooting gun. I assume r33h you also have a 24" barrel? The 870 SPS-T is put together a little better than the Mossbergs, not saying a Mossberg is a bad gun mind you.

I use a Remington 11-87 SP, 3" chamber with a 21" barrel, fiber optic sights, and extended Trulock choke tube. I mostly use this one on rainy days because of the iron sights. My favorite is my T/C Encore with a thumbhole stock, topped with a Simmons 4x turkey scope. The stock fits me like a glove, and the gun is nice and light. My eyes also favor the scoped gun as I get older. They both pattern real nice with Federal #5's.

Got an old browningbps. This thing is a tank and can take the 3 1/2 in loads like theyre 2 3/4. Patterns pretty decent with factory choke. I would like to get another choke to improve it but dont want to spend the extra money!!!

Winchester 1300 with 28" barrel, 3" Rem hevi-shot 6's and turkey choke. Red dot last year, new Bushnell 1.5-4.5x scope for this year. I use it because it was the only gun I had with interchangeable chokes when I started turkey hunting, and now I won't change.

Pedersoli double barrel, black powder, percussion 12 guage. Because its just a little bit harder! And oh what fun! :D

I believe it is a 23" barrel, aren't they? It is the factory barrel that comes on the gun. It is either 23" or 24"...

Remington 870 express 12 ga using standard full choke. Nothing fancy, no camo, no nothing, just a bird killing gun!

I also have a Savage 24F which would be a really nice turkey gun if you could hunt with rifle in NY. It is an over/under break action with a 12 ga on the bottom and a .22 hornet on the top. Camo stock, and rifle sights. I might bring it out this season anyway, just becuase it is more compact then the 870, and just use the 12 ga barrel.

Im shooting a Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 ga., with a red dot dight, I shoot it because it is all I have!

I've got an old Remington 870 Express that is currently my only shotgun. I use it with its original 28" barrel with a ported remington turkey choke tube. It makes for a long and heavy gun but it works. I wanted to put on a sims recoil pad, but at the time they only made them for synthetic stocks, and I happened to find a Remington camo stock marked down at wally world for $13. I use a scope too. This year I might use a Mossberg 835. I'm looking to buy it from a friend who just got himself a Beneli.

i shoot a benelli nova 3.5 with a pure gold choke tube and rem hevi#5 in the early part of the season before the green-up and when i travel. then i change to a rem870 20ga with 3in nitros after the green-up for close range shots.

Your correct r33h, our turkey killing machines have 23" barrels. I knew that. I don't know where I got 24 inches from.

Just me but I think 70 yards is to far to be shooting turkeys with any load...

Especialy a 2oz copper plated load!!!

I agree with you there. The max should be more like 50 yards. I know some loads, especially hevi shot, will kill them past 50, but you are pushing your luck. The comfort range should be 40 and closer. I've killed them at 50, but I sure like to get them a lot closer.

I've killed one gobbler past 50 yards... I was using a 3.5" mag with #4's (2oz of #4's going 1300fps)

I've patterned a lot of turkey guns and I've seen quite a few being patterned and a gun that will pattern out to 50 yards is not very common... Let alone 70 yards;)

I would have to agree as well...70 seems a little too long especially with a 3" #5 shot lead shotshell. I could see a high density shell such as Hevi-shot or the Winchester Extended Range HD loads reach that far, but I would still have to wonder if the pellet is carrying enough energy to penetrate the bird. At that disance, I would think that a pattern would be too sparatic with many "holes" in it. For me, 50 yards would be my max with any load. Half the fun is getting that close!

For years I've always ben a Remingtom man. I had the 870 and the 1187 but last year I got rid of them and bought a Benelli SBE II. I picked up a Jelly Head tube for it but have yet to put any loads through it. Soon..real soon :D

I bought me a 3.5" 870 SPT few years back and I was not a real big fan of the 3.5" mags but I am now!!! That thing is just plain awsome!!! Will throw a killing pattern out to 50 yards with #4's... I've never had a turkey gun that would pattern #4's worth a crap... Nothing like slamming a load of 4's into a gobbler at 40 yards... can you say "busted gobbler"

I use my Remington 870 Turkey Special (1998 version if I remember correctly. It was back when the entire gun was camo and not just the stock.) with Federal 3in #6s in the Spring.

But for Fall, I use .45 Kentucky Rifle w/Patched RB 65g Pyrodex RS or Remington Genesis w/10mm 155g XTP and 60g 777 or a .50 Hawkins w/Patched RB and 60g Pryrodex RS.

I'm a ML guy. In fact Spring turkey is the only season I use something OTHER than a ML.
