Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Anybody ever use a 20 guage

We always talk about 12 loads and 10 guage loads , and I use a 12 guage with turkey choke, but has anyone had any luck with a 20 guage or willing to admit using one for turkey. I would not hesitate to try mine if I thought enough pellets could get into the pattern.

I have two 20 gauge turkey guns that I experiment with when I want to try something different from the 12's. One is an Ithaca Semi Auto and the other is a Remington 870.

I will break down the 870, if you don't mind.

The gun is fitted with a Hastings turkey choke and topped off with a Bushnell HOLOsight. I shoot #6 - 3" Hevi-Shot through it. The pattern rocks out to 35-40 yards. I doubt I would ever shoot a turkey that far away with it, but it has already dropped a gobbler in its tracks at 30 yards.

It's third gun from the top... The little guy. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Shot my first couple birds with a 20ga.This was years ago before there was any such thing as a TURKEY load or TURKEY choke. One of my good friends wives has taken her turkey with a .410.I've never known her to shoot at one and not get it.(wish I could say that)

It's all about pattern, pattern, pattern. I used (and my kids will use initially) a slug barrel single shot Ithaca - worked just fine. Just need to know what you can do with it - pattern, pattern, patter, before hand.

My oldest son killed his first turkey with a single shot H&R 20ga!It'll get the job done just fine as long as you dont stretch the barrel,12's and 10's have there limits too!Bigger isn't always better especially for a youngster!

My daughter uses a rem 870 youth with a hastings ext. turkey choke and fed. 3&quot; #6 shot. If it's 35 yards or closer and she does her part the birds coming home. Very good pattern.
