Default 870 Express Super Mag - Choke/Load Combos

This yearI will be mostly bowhunting for birds, but will also have a few shotgun hunts. I have a Mossberg 500 turkey gun with the 24" ported barrel that shoots awesome patterns out to 50 yards with the 3" #5 winchester supremes, but wanted to loan that to my dad this year and tune up my new Remington 870 Express Super Mag with a scope, turkey choke, and 3.5" loads. I am interested in trying a hevi type of shot as well to get increased pellet counts.....I love the idea of a hevi #5 shot if they will pattern.

So, what 3.5" choke/shell combo patterns the best out of your Express Super Mag?

I bought my 870 Supermag last spring...I'm currently shooting a Kick's GT choke with 3.5" Win. Supreme #5's. Its been a pretty good combo so far...I killed a nice longbeard@ 45yds. with it last spring and put a coyote down in its tracks without so much as a twitch @35 yds. However, I too am think about upgrading to get a tighter pattern. There's always that one time every spring where you have that gobbler that you've been after all season hung-up at 50-55 yds. and you wish that you could reach out and touch him. The thing that worries me though is having a pattern that so tight that you miss birdsat 20-30 yds. You can only kill a turkey so dead I guess.

Check out these chokes...they're the new rage on the NWTF forums...

Good luck this spring....

I use the super full .660 choke that came with my super mag, and shoot 2 oz. 3 1/2 inch # 5 Federal Flight controls. Great pattern.

I am an agreement with SouthernStrut. I have the Remington 870 SPS-T with thumbhole and I use a Primos Jelly head choke tube and I am getting nice patterns out to 50 yards with the Federal Flight control wads 3.5" #5 shot. The next best that I tried was the Winchester Supremes 3.5" #5 shot with same choke and gun. I tried the Hevi-shot Hevi 13's, but the patterning was absolutely aweful! I have read that the Hundertaker gets pretty nice patterns with the Hevi-shot, but I haven't tried the undertaker tube as of yet. I will probably do some experimenting with it after the season is over with. The 3.5" Federals with the jelly head is what I am going with for this season. Best of luck to you this upcoming season!

I've been using a MAD choke in my 870 Super along with Winchester Supreme Elite Xtended Range 3.5" 6 shot and also patterned the Fed Flight Control and Hevi Shot as well. Winchester Xtended range patterned best with my choke followed by Hevi shot and then Fed Flight was the worse. Those Xtended Range hit hard at 40 yards too as it actually knocked the wooden target over whereas the other two just waivered it.

hello,
I bought an 870 Rem. 3 1/2 mag as well. I have no place to pattern the gun. I bought a box of #4 Winchester supremes3 1/2 ". I've not shot the gun yet. I will be hunting this Sat. Would you all recomend me using the normal full choke thatI bought or the turkey true glo choke.I bought as well.I'll be hunting in a swamp and my fartherest shot will be no greater than 30 yds.

Thanks from a city dweller.

From my experience with # 4's you need a more open choke. With my 870
it came with a .685 factory choke that shoots very well with # 4's. I tried
Winchester #4's and Rem. Nitro #4's 3 1/2 inch 2oz. shot out of my gun
and the Rem. Nitro's patterned better. Hope this helps.

Thanks alot for answering my question. I thought it was missed.
I checked out the Remington Nitros and i noticed they were a few feet per second slower so I went with speed. Teh Winchester Supremes at Cabelas with shipping were 18.00 .At Walmart they were about 9.50 per 10. The full choke I have is the one that came with the separate set that is available. I beleive it is the .685. I did ask for advice though and plan to pick up a box of Nitros as you suggested. After the hunt Sat. I plan to drive far away from all hunters and pattern my gun. I have a range finder.
Thanks again,
C7

I shoot Win. HV 3 1/2" 5 shot, 2 oz loads through a .665 Madd Maxx Choke and if my pattern got any tighter it would be unusable. It is almost unusable now inside 30.
