Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default New Turkey Gun, I hope!

I suppose this should go under the firearms section, but since the gun is for turkey hunting, I'm gonna put it here for you other brothers to here about.

I've been wanting a single shot shotgun, and one without an exposed hammer, I don't like hammer guns. Remington is importing one made in Russia, it's called the Spartan SPR 100. I read about it in a Buckmaster mag. and the writer converted it to a slug gun. It is set up for clay shooting. It comes with a 29 1/2 barrel, vent rib, cross bolt safety. Chambered for 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells, one version is ported, and another version dose not have the vent rib.

I paid $200.00 for it new (had to order it). Here's what I had done to it.
I had the gun shop cut the barrel to 23 inches, because I have several winchester shotguns I had them thread the barrel for winchokes so I could use the choke tubes I already have. The barrel is pretty thick and is crome lined. I already had a mad choke tube for turkey hunting and thats what I put on it. I had them drill and tap it and install a scope rail, installed Sims recoil pad, and installed sling studs and swivels. I had them lighten the trigger pull to 4 lbs. I weighed it and it weighs 6.6 lbs. I intend to put a Nikon shotgun scope (turkey pro) on it, and this should bring the weight up to about 7 lbs. The reciever comes nickle plated and I covered that section with camo vinyl. The cost of the parts and labor was $237.00, for a total price of $437.00.

It looks pretty good and as soon as I get the scope I'll see how it shoots and if the Sims recoil pad works. I figure it's gonna kick like a five legged mule. Will let y'all know how it shoots later. If anyone is interested in seeing the stock version, you can go to Remingtons web site and to the shotgun section, then click on the SPR 100 single shot.

I looked for other single shot shotguns without a hammer and the only other one I could find (and there may be some that I couldn't find) was a Browning, with a retail price of $1300.00 and I definitely couldn't go there.

I have the Baikal portedversion of one of the guns your describing. In other words Remington hadn't started importing them under the Spartan name yet when I got this one.

Single shots are fun. Even with the standard barrel it is just slightly longer than my Benelli with a 21 inch barrel. Of course that is due to not having to compensate for the action on the receiver of the semi-auto weapon.

All I did to mine is put on some Truglow sights and a Carlson turkey choke and it was good to go. It is a light gun however and with a 3" inch turkey load it wants to knock you into next week. In a hunting situation one doesn't notice it so bad, but sighting that thing in was a bone jarring adventure. This year I used Winchester's Extended Range 2 3/4" and took a tom at forty yards with it so it will get the job done.

I have taken pheasant and turkey with the little gun. It has done everything I have asked of it and because it was not an expensive gun,I never have to worry about scratching it up while in the field.

Let's see if I can dig up a photo.....
