RE: calling hens?
Any number of things could make cause them to be silent. Predators, lots of hens, hunting pressure, their mood, and age of the bird. If he has lots of hens he may not gobble very much because he has what he needs, and if it's and older bird he may not gobble much because he has most of the hens with him. If you can find the place that he like sto use as a strut zone you may be able to get him. When he is in the "zone" he won't gobble much, instead he will show off by strutting.
Finally, if nothing else works try to bust them up either before or after fly down. Just like in the fall. I spooked a gobbler away from his hens at 7:15 PM last friday, and he circled the spot where I spooked him and gobbled three times on the roost. Too bad he was on a neighbors property. Maybe next time.

RE: calling hens?
I've been turkey hunting since 93... And I rerely hear hens being very vocal in the woods during hunting season... Now before the season that's a different story...
Must have something to do with all the "Neophytes" running around in the woods
