Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default My first turkey

We went out saturday mornin, and heard turkeys gobblin and got set up within 80 yds. of them, come to find out they werent interested in eatin they went the other way into the woods. So after about a couple hours tryin to figure out where they went we left and tried to find another spot, we went around this big field and theirs a road about 3/4 of a mile from where we were at and there they were on public ground. So we had to park our truck about 3/4 of a mile away and snuck out there and we were tryin to get to these other turkeys when we just see 2 big fans over the hill, i hurried and got set up, and my dad barely called twice and here he came a big tom, i didnt even care how big of a beard he had i just knew he was good from the size of him he came into about 25-30 yds and i let him have it. So i had my first turkey by 9:30, i can't wait till this next weekend it was so much fun. It had one 1 3/8 in. spur and the other was broken off. The spur was big enough my dad could hang the turkey off his finger with it, it had one 3 1/2 in beard and you could see the scar where another beard used to be, i dont know how to tell the age of the bird but he looked older. It was a great hunt. The photos are on this link.

Alright! Nice little Jake. My first Turkey, which was last year, also had a three and a half inch beard. Try to save the tail, beard, and whatever else, salt the flesh, mount it on a board spreading out the tail with nails!

does anyone heard of a turkeys beard being ripped off, there deffinately used to be a beard because you can see a scar, this one has deffinately gotten in some fights, it had five or six puncture wounds in the breast and the feathers were thinned out in that area, has anyone also heard of a spur being ripped off, it definately has 1 nice spur but the other one is gone. It's definately not a jake, the fan is 2 inches wider than my dads bird he got last year, its a nice one im just wondering why its missing a beard and a spur. Thanks

Congrats on an awesome bird.I'm sure it's only the first of many more to come.To answer your questions. It's not that uncommon for an old gobbler to have lost a spur or have one broken part way off(rough terrain, fightin, etc.)As for the beard lots of things could of happened to it too.Mites is one example.Still a good 3yr old or older.
