If you were to buy only one slate call what would it be? What would it be made of? Ive heard glaas are good but I dont know much about these kind of calls yet. Im a diaphram user. Also What striker or set of strikers would you buy. Thanks

Well actually you can have two pot calls in one.

Andy Kiaser (Kaiser Calls)sells a pot that is Glass over slate. Got glass on one side and slate on the other!

Slate ain't worth squat when damp or wet - glass works better those condiditons...so ya got them both covered.

If I only had one.It would be a cody glass.Walnut pot.I love my ENVY series,but all of them sound great.The new turkline has a little higher pitch than the other ones.I'm guessing since it has a lighter wood pot.The strikers that come with them sound great.Usually hickory.

If it starts raining you can switch back to your mouth calls,but get that slate back in a zip-loc bag.

It wouldn't be a slate at all since they're worthless once they get wet , don't get me wrong , I love my Quaker Bow G.P.S. call until it gets wet .

I'd choose either a glass like the HS Double Duece or synthetic like the Primos Power Crystal . I like wood strikers like chestnut or rosewood , but once the wet stuff comes down it's carbon or acrylic . I can't use diaphram calls , so I always carry 3 friction pot style calls and at least 3-5 different strikers .

The pot calls are all I usually use. Believe it or not, i bought an H.S. Strutt slate call from wal-mart 4 years ago. It came with a wooden striker and a carbon striker. The both work excellent and have called in plenty of birds with it. The best thing about them is that they can get wet and still work. Since I hunt in any weather this call works wonders. A box call doesn't work when its wet, nora crystall or glass call. But I like to use the crystall and the glass calls also. They are very loud and work great for long distance calls..lol no pun intended. I like to go to the turkey expo here in arkansas where i get to try a variety of calls and get tips from other hunters there. I always keep a diaphragm in my mouth for those moments when i cant move my hands when that turkey is up close. But my favored calls are the pot slate, glass and crystall calls. I have tried the two in one pot calls. Where one side was glass and the other side was slate but it didn't even last a year. It fell apart. I cant remember who made it though.

Same here, River Valley's Mojo...glass over slate...slate on the bottom, several calls in one with the two provided hickory and carbon strikers..pictured below is a custom striker...one of easiest glass calls to use, no roughing/scratching glass and ruining it. It's an acid washed glass not a polished glassed with needs scratched up....

The "pot" type of calls are some of my personal favorites. I currently own three Custom made ones, one slate and two glass, along with Knight & Hales Ol' yeller's composite surfaced call. These calls sure make some sweet turkey music!!

Andy Kaiser glass over slate, It's a great sounding call with aggresive yelps and cutts on the glass side and soft yelps and purrs on the slate side. Andy can basically make whatever type of call you want you just tell him what you are looking for and he can do it.

Sorryif I'm misreading, but are you saying you can't use a crystal or glass call in the rain? That's the only friction calls that you can use in the rain. You won'tbe able to use a wooden striker in the rain, but you justswitch to an acrylic or carbon striker and call away. If you aren't able to use your glass or crystal call in the rain, you need to condition it more. I'd recommend using a stone to do it. I can take one of our pots with a crystal or glass surface,put some standing water on the surface, pull out an acrylic striker,and hit every note. That is a selling point of those surfaces vs. slate. That's also a good way to tell if your surface is ready for the woods. If there is water on it and the grooves are deep enough to grab the striker, you're good to go. That's why I prefer to carry crystal in the woods around here. It gets a little wet here in the Spring...among other times.
