Some good advice above. Dont limit yourself to one call. My vest has 20 pockets, and believe me, they all have their use. I carry at least 3 pot type calls, one or 2 box calls, and several mouth calls, plus locator calls (owl hooter, crow call, peacock call.) You never know what's going to get that longbeard fired up, and it might not be the one call you chose to get. My favorite calls to use are the pot type calls. A nice inexpensive production one is the Primos Power Crystal. Another good one easy for a beginner to use is Knight And Hales Ol' Yeller. Good luck this spring!

Good responses for sure!It can take years to be a versitale turkey caller imho! Not only learning to use all our modern day devices but the overall know how to use them in different situations afield and on that days specific gobbler!I can look back on many years turkey huntin and remember but just a few that a specific call changed the day!Being versitale is great but timing, knowing what call to use in that given situation and your overall set-up have far more to do with your success than what kind of call or the brand name on it!!I do like the changover for sure from mouth to friction and like Longbeard use basically two calls in the same manner on 90% of all my hunts!I use either a black magic oxidized aluminum scratch call made by H.S.(production)or my (custom) slate osage orange by Steve Harrison as my friction calls! For my mouth calls I use an old raspy hen in the tone trough frame most of the time!
Saint practice for sure once you get your calls but you will find your best learning expereinces will come afield as it was and still is with all of us!Apply some patience with your calling, learn your woods and your birds and you'll call a turkey in come spring!!Enjoy....Bob
