HNI visitor,the most common way to hunt fall turkeys is to locate a flock and scatter or bust them up.Try and send them in every direction if possible.Once you've got a good break-up of the birds set up at the break point and call them back using lost calls such as the kee kee and kee kee run.Young birds that are lost from their own family flock can be quite vocal very soon after being split up.Listen to thier vocalizations and do the best you can to duplicate it as you call to them.The key to the whole scenario is that initial break-up.You want as many birds as possible flying and running in different directions.A good break-up can create a situation where you'll be able to take more than one bird out of the same set-up as they return to the break-up point to regroup!Hope it helps BOB.

Well I have yet to put a tag on a fall bird. But this is more or less my take on how it works. First of all Your strategy will differ depending on if your after Hens and their young, which make up the larger flocks you will find in the fall. Or if you are after Gobblers, which hang in small groups of 2-5 birds. When you talking about hunting the hens and their young, you will have more succsess with your calling. You can Yelp, Cut, Cluck, Purr, and use the Kee Kee run. Traditionaly You would locate a flock, slip in as close as you can, and then rush them hollering and waveing your arms like a mad man. This is to scatter the flock and get them separated from each other. Once you have them Scattered find yourself a nice spot and sit and wait. After 20 to 30 minutes you should start to hear some turkey talk, The flock will be looking to reassemble. Join in with some Kee Kee Runs and yelps. You should get a bird or two to come in to check you out. Once Gobbcaller and I called in a whole flock without scattering them. We spotted them from afar and slipped way ahead of them. Gobbcaller called them in and I flubbed the shot. The flock scatterd nicely at the shot so we stayed put and started working them back in. Well movement got me busted twice by two different birds as they snuck in to check out our calls. So remember keep still. As for fall Gobblers. Well they are shy and reclusive in the fall. They don't respond well to calls, and they rarely gobble in the fall. They do Yelp though and you might get their attention with some Gobbler yelps of your own. Gobbler yelps are Slow, low pitched and raspy. As for what I know, I have a group of three Gobblers patterned. I hope that if I get a fall tag they will still be going about the same routine. They come out into this secluded field every after noon between 3:00 and 4:00 to dust and eat bugs. My plan is to slip in and set up along the edge of the field and ambush one of them.
Not quite the excitement of springtime but I will be just as excited if I get one.

There is plenty more to be said about fall Turkey hunting. I might have overlooked a few points, Hope it helps.
