Default Spring scouting?

We talk alot about scouting here on the forum and I was wondering how much we really do before season gets here.I know many of the hunters around here dont do any they just keep going to the same spots they went to the year before and if they dont hear anything they do most of there scouting during season.I think this is a big mistake.Season opens here the last weekend of march and I'll be headed to the woods next month to start looking for birds.I found some birds in some strange places during my preseason scouting over the years and it sure helps in being able to scout birds enough to know their travel routes, feeding, and roosting areas. To me your one step ahead of the competition if your prepared opening weekend. How much scouting do you do?

BOB buddy, I start in the fall for the spring hunt.In the fall the farmers have allready planted there spring wheat , you can see the corn fields that have been left, this is where the birds are going to spend there time, throught the winter I'll keep a good eye on flocks, most times there still in the area in the spring, then come spring just brush up on the honey holes, to see what sign there is around. Getting out and driving is one good way to scout , and you can take Mom with you to make her happy,a nice country drive and never tell her what your up too! your hitting two birds with one stone ...BT

I'm always hangin around my huntin areas anyways so it's easy to keep an eye on them.I usually end up in the same spots year after year but that's because that's where I find the birds every year while scoutin.Like GC I really enjoy the scoutin.Great time of the year to be in the woods.

With me,Scouting ahead of time is hard to do on a regular basis,as there are no turkeys were I live. Were I hunt,I'll go down the weekend before my season starts and do as much as I can in those 2 days. When I travel out of state,I'll generally scout and hunt at the same time. The first day will usually be more scouting then hunting though.

My honey hole for turkey is the same area I hunt deer so I'm checking out during the fall a lot. I don't do any scouting before the spring season because I know exactly where they are each spring. I go in the evening before my hunts and catch a few going up to their roost to create my game plan for in the morning.

However if I didn't know where they were you bet I'd be out in the woods looking by early March.
