RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
Sorry guys I don't know who's legite and who's not. All I want to know is if I do purchase one of these cameras whether a scout guard or different name I want to know if the camera is going to perform in sub zero weather here in Wisconsin. I like to see who is still standing after the hunting seasons are over.
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
Have you bought from this seller before? If there's something with the camera within one year warranty period, I guess the businesswill still be there to help you sort it out? |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
WI,
I don't have first hand experience yet with below zero temps. The manufacturer rates them to -30F and so far all there claims have been met or exceeded. I believe the cam will perform flawlessly in subzero temps. Battery life will be negatively impacted, but thats just batteries, not a fault of the camera. I've seen batteries in other cams cut in half usually and as much as 75%. Thats another reason to buy a ScoutGuard or Covert. The battery life is beyond great so when it gets frigid you'll still get decent battery life. |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
skin dog1,
If the battery life is as good or better than last years I40 then I might have to give the 550 a try as long as I get the one that they have installed more LED's. I was not impressed with some of the night pictures I seen from the old version. The I40 has alot of LED's and has know problem illuminating a large area. |

The I40 has alot of LED's and has know problem illuminating a large area. if you dont angle the laser light right way, it will not light up great. i put mine up high and angle it down. right now it shows up about 40 ft at night and real good at about 20/25 ft away. its working real good for me, i have 600 pics and battery is showing 78%but those duracells are 4 years old too. the only complain i have is silver ir window, the camera stealers pick that up quick. i heard you can use the THIN tint your window stuff at auto stores and put it over it,dont get real dark thick ones, they make a real thin one. i also heard some are using camera film to cover it also. |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
Does anyone know if there is a new scoutguard coming out this month with more LED's? I thought I read about this last month. They are hoping to cut down on the tunnel vision situation on the nitetime pics.
My (07) I40 quit working a couple days ago. It wouldn't switch from setup mode to auto mode. I got it replaced by this years model and already I can see the difference in the trigger speed, it sucks. Two pics of half the deer and I would sure like my (07)model back. I am thinking about getting a refund so I can buy a different brand. Why in the world moutrie would want to go backwards is beyond me.[:@] |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
May have been my that mentioned about the new Scout guard cam. It is supposed to be out in the new year.

RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
I'm still using my old 35mm $49.95 stealth cam but convinced the wife that with the price of film and developing, plus only 5-6 decent pics per roll we are wasting money. My 550just came in the mail yesterday. Only took 3 days to get here.I have some deer that travel through our yard every night even though we are right in town. I'm going to set out a few corn cobs near my deck and see what I get tonight.
Should I leave it on the default settings, or go to low sensitivity right away? Other thoughts on set up. |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
I would change the default settings as in pics it is at 3MP. If you are using pics, I would change it to 5MP. If the weather is cold, use normal to low sensitivity. I prefer 3 pic burst.
Joe BBO |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
will normal to low sensitivity increase battery life significantly (compared to high sensitivity)?
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
Thanks, I'll give that a try.
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
Bee Busy,
Sent you a email, might want to buy a Cam. |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
Hey Sparkkky,
Got it and sent one back. Thanks! Hey Rackluster, Changing the sensitivity will not change the battery life. The only change would be less pics taken on low that would have picked up on high. Very minimal though......... Joe BBO |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
that's what I thought about the battery life.
I have my scoutguard over a scrape that is ON FIRE! I love that little camera!!! |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
can u view the pics right in the field without any extra equipment?? thanks
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
the camera doesn't have a built in viewer. this camera is absolutely tiny, there's no room for a viewer.
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
No need to carry a viewer to see pics or videos
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
I use the moultrie game viewer to view pics in the field. Small and works with the SG550.......
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
Well I got a couple of pics, they were less than brilliant as I had the camera set too low and only got mid-body and lower shots, and the deer didn't eat the corn. What it looks like is a doe followed by a buck (much larger body and thick neck but couldnt' see the top of the head) about 45 seconds apart. I also got plenty of shots of cars driving down the street beside our house as I forgot to set it on Low. Good practice anyway and I'm heading to the woods in the a.m. to hunt and set it up.

RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
ordered mine today
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
How is the trigger speed compared to the Cuddy?? Most pics I'm seeing are over bait/corn or on a mineral site...None just cruising a trail....Is the trigger instant like the cuddy???
Edit- Just read the Cuddy Capture is 1/2 second and the SG550 is 1 second.. |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
The SG550 triggers between 0.8 to 1.2 seconds...............
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
In my testing the ScoutGuard SG550 was quicker than both the Cuddeback Expert and Capture. All three were quick but we are splitting hairs between the ScoutGuard and the Capture with a 0.14 second difference in my testing.

RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
To WIbuckchaser,
Yes, there is a new camera model that is coming out this month. It is built on the Scoutguard(SG550) platform but with more LED lights, wider angle, more improvements, and all in a very covert "Camo" pattern. The new camera is under "DLC Covert" brand. The manufacturer (BMC, who make Scoutguard) has partnered with DLC Covert to deliver this new camera to the North American market. All "Camo" are manufacturer made, not after market add ons. Theirs don't look anything like the current SG550 Camo pattern. If you go to www.scoutguard.com website, you will see the announcement about the partnership. http://www.scoutguard.com/English/newsinfo.asp?ID=47 I have heard that Canada will get the first shipment in about 5-7 days. You should check with DLC Covert to see when you can buy from them. A GREAT Christmas present under the tree. :-) |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
Where can one see the pic, writeup and $$ on the new cam?? pics
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
Anybody had any luck using rechargeable AA's in the Scout Guard?
|
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
I've been using my new Scoutguard for a couple weeks now and have gotten almost nothing on it. I know it's working because I get shots of fellow hunters in the area (argh). My question is about what height to position the camera.I've been setting it about 4 feet off the ground about 15 feet from the targeted area. I just noticed that the manual says 5' to 6.5' up and 15-20' from the targeted area.
I realize that the PIR sensor aims more down from where the camera is pointed--am I missing stuff as a result? What has been your experience? |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
Just do some testing I run mine about 3 feet up and 10 -12 feet from site.

RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
SSGG,
Just curious how you know so much about DLC cams when you've never layed hands on one? Currently there is only one covert II this side of china and I'm 100% certain you've never seen it. I'm a dealer for both HCO cams and DLC cams. I can vouch for both companies customer service and products -They are great! The few problems I've had out of either brand have been handled quickly. I'm approaching 500 units sold just since june so I know a little bit about both comapanies customer service. Sing ScoutGuards praises all you want cause it is a hell of a little camera, but so is the covet. I'm sure the new covert II will be a great unit as well. My initial order has already been placed sight unseen. I'll be testing the units before listing them on my site so I'll post up some sample pics as soon as possible. Lets wait until the camera is available before we start doing reviews, OK! |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
ORIGINAL: rasorbackq Where can one see the pic, writeup and $$ on the new cam?? pics It's amazing how someone can respond to your question that has not seen the camera, nor works for Covert or the manufacturerand give you a review of the features or performance ofa camera that won't be available for another week or so, and in the same breath tell you what HCO is coming with.(you might think their sole purpose is to follow the forums and trash the covert camera and promote HCO). The covert IIis built on the SG550 platform, but does open from the front to access the batteries and controls. The led's have changed to provide a 10° wider pattern and the camera is camo. There is no significant loss of battery life because of the 2 additional LED's (a few hours from the total as compared to the sg550 model). The price of $40 more, well, go to the covert store and see the pricing and what comes with the camera. Camo SG550's sell for $209 and someone didn't do the math on this.... As for the security issue, we all know the groove was basicly ineffective for security purposes on the SG550. That is why there was a bear/security safe box made for the camera. By not adding expense to a camera forinefficient security this enables the consumer to have a choice (based on need) to have a bear safe or a bracket to secure the camera to fit the need / application. As for service, I believe you pay return shipping on a warranty camera from some and Covert does not charge return shipping. |

Nobody is blind here. FYI: the link has many quite interesting readings. |

Didn'texpectit's such a hotseat here. |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
To Rasorbackq,
There is no difference between ScoutGuard and Covert I. HCO does not make Socutguard. BMC (Boly Media Communications, Inc) makes Scoutguard. If you compare the camera to the car industry, when Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix are both made by the same plant, no one bad mouth either of them. The way I look at it, it is the same thing here. Some people like Vibe and some people like Toyota. I don't know any backdoor and undertable things from BMC, I have not heard any. I was just thinking it seems to be alright to SSGG when HCO got the exclusive deal to Scoutguard. But now, someone else (not HCO) got a different camera from BMC, then things are all bad now. I just wish people had their facts before they talk.... |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
I don't want to be involved in such fights.
As for backdoor and undertable thingys, no customers really care (maybe care a little in the long run?) I read the FACTS from chasingame websiteand I don't have the energy to repeat them here. They were from trustworthy forum users and I believe they are HARD FACTS. WHO ARE YOU do say they are not facts? Do some quick search onchasingame website yourself if you are interested to know the things I read. BMC as amanufacturer in Chinamay want to consider their reputation in future contracts and business deals for their own good. Customers want reliable products and trustworthy sellers, that's all. PEACE. |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
To SSGG,
I agree with you "PEACE". This forum is about cameras, and it should stay that way. All I said to WIbuckchaser was there is a new camera coming out from BMC( Since he asked and I am a Canadian rep so I answered him. We sell Scoutguard in Canada and we could not get "Camo" from BMC for SG550 so when Covert II came out with "Camo" from BMC, we have decided to carry them both). Since none of us has seen the camera yet, the opinions toward this new camera should stop right here. Give it a chance and don't kill it before it is even shown. Thanks! |
RE: Scout Guard SG 550. Next Best Camera?
looks like a pretty good cam if you ask me...
