cam can run on 4 or 8 batteries. This cam seems to use 4 batteries (one side) and then the LED comes on while the other 4 batteries are not used. Yes .9 volts and 1.7 volts.

HMMM, not sure why it would drain 4 batteries and not all.... I'd put8 brand new batteries in the camera and put it in a high traffic area like the kids playroom or the office and see what it does. Set it to take 3 shots every 30 seconds and leave it for a couple days. That should simulate several weeks in the woods under normal conditions. See what happens then. Check your batteries to see if they have different voltage readings. I know the cams will work with 4 batteries installed closest to the hinge, but will nor work with just 4 batteries on the other side. If the batteries are dead that are closest to the hinge then I'd say there is a short or something.

4 batteries are technically for emergency use. It needs the 8 batteries for normal operation. Did you test the batteries before you placed them in the cam? I have learned that even if the batteries are brand new, they can be defective. I always test them first. Test a fresh set and put it out and see what the outcome of that is. That should point us in the right direction...............

all were tested at 1.7 volts. just seemed out that one side was dead and one side was full power but yet the cam was dead.

I had the cam set up in the yard as a test . It would be nothing to get 300-500 pics a day of the free range chickens and turkeys. Batteries lasted for weeks. Ate through 4 batteries in 10 days last time . But put the video to use. between 50-62 50 sec videos ea day for a week . Most at night. Cam was never off Cant complain about that...

I've read a lot of good about this camera and plan to buy one in the future but I doubt I will before it supports sd cards bigger than 2gb. We should be seeing cameras support 8gb cards anymore with the price of them.

A 2gb card in my 6mp Moultrie with daytime video and night flash will fill in 7days which is why I run 4gb cards.

Has anyone tried putting a 4gb card in one of these SG 550's to see if it will see it?
