Default #1 Reason I use French Amber Flints

This lock/frizzen is the factory lock on my Traditions Mountain Rifle with 1/2x5/8" French Amber Flints.

Close up of another strike to the frizzen.

Looks like the 4th of July. I've been having good luck with the black English flints.

I have tried French Amber flints but found them no more reliable or have longer shot life then the black English flints. And at double the price could not justify them as "the go to flint." They do work good. But so do the black english.

Actually I have had amazing luck with the Lyman Cut Agate Flints. Amazing number of shots on them. And when the edge wears, I hit it with a dremel tool.

Rich Pierce's White Missouri flints also work very well. Pretty darn close to the Black English flints in performance and longevity but more reasonably priced.

I have never tried French Amber flints but have tried the agate flints and they're junk IMO.

WAUGH! I was shooting the MR today and I guess my leather was to short and I lost a beautiful new flint I put in this morning! Gotta wait till the snow melts to go and find it.

I'm curious as to why you use leather? I prefer a flattened strip of lead. I secures the flint IMO better than leather and there is zero "bounce" when the flint strikes the frizzen.

Speaking of the frizzen I was watching a video (
) and this old gentlemen had mentioned the parts of the flintlock. What we refer to as the frizzen, he called the hammer. And what we call the hammer, he called the cock. If what he is saying is correct than by true definition of the phrase "cocking the hammer" does not mean pulling what we call the hammer back all the way. But instead means firing the rifle and the cock striking the hammer - hence cocking the hammer.
hmmmmmmmm........

That's really fast Devil. (And a great video of a semi-auto flintlock - just the kind used in Hollywood. )
