Drill cloth is about as good as it gets. The slick side goes next to the ball.

I had the Mrs. wash it in with some of my jeans today. I think it may need another washing, still seems kinda stiff if ya ask me. I'm not sure what you mean by "slick side"... it appears as though the weave may be raised a bit more on one side than the other if that's what you mean??
