What are the major differences between recurves & longbows? Are longbows slower? I had heard that longbows had more handshock? Is this also true?

I would say my 64lb crusader longbow is about as fast and as smooth as my bob lee recurve at 64lbs both drawn to the same draw length (granted I draw the curve about 1/2" longer due to holding style).
I think it has more to do with design. I have a old herters bow that bounces all over the place in your hands (and is noisy to boot)...I dont think it should be shot anymore but I did when I first FOUND it (ya it was in the dump in a leather case believe it or not!) More often then not though a recurve is going to be smoother as far as hand shock and quicker as far as speed is concerned, imo I would say a recurve is going to be smoother on the draw but from what limited play time and what few bows I have (all 11 of them <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>) I would have to say a curve is smoother to draw on the average all else being equal! Its kinda hard to take a 58" recurve and compare it to a 68" longbow imo! Then again there isnt many folks up here with very quality bows....a few but not many! just my .02

From my limited experience, I've found recurves to be more forgiving for me. They are easier to shoot. Some have some handshock but for the most part, it isn't noticeable on most recurves. They also tend to be faster by design than longbows. However, they are noisier than the LB. Longbows, in my opinion, point easier than recurves do and are usually lighter in the hand. Then you have the r/d longbow/flatbow like the Crusader, that is a good combination of a recurve and longbow. In my opinion, giving the best qualities of both styles to the shooter. They are more forgiving and faster as well as retaining the quiet and pointability of the longbow, making for one heck of a combination.
