NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

I posted earlier about looking into Traditional Bowhunting and received lots of good advise! BTW, I ordered the Byron Ferguson book!
I am curious now to see what equipment everyone is using. Type of bow, quiver, arrows, broadheads, glove or tab,etc...

THANX

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

I shoot an OL Adcock 3 piece longbow, bocote riser and cane limbs. I have a back quiver, I shoot Graphlex arrows and 2216 aluminums (woods are great but I don't want to spend the time with them) and use a glove. I aint much of a shot, but enjoy shooting my bow as much as the next guy. Playing with arrows - crowning and cresting, is a lot of fun too.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

I shoot a ChekMate Crusader longbow: 64" 56# @ 28" Yew limbs with purpleheart core, grey actionwood riser. Right now using some old 2214 arrows. Haven't had time to get to the proshop (30 miles away) to get the proper arrows for this bow.

The recurve is my old Colorado Bighorn. 55#

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

Currently, I use my Bear Recurve, I have an OL Adcock one piece longbow on order, but it won't be ready for another year. I use aluminum arrows with a 160 grain head (Magnus). I use gloves from Black Widow. I use a back quiver, but also have a side mount.

Lurp Dog - it sounds like you have the traditional bug!!! LOL My advice is don't try to fight it, just go with it.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

BobCo19-65: I have an very good condition, 1956 Bear recurve (Grizzly?)in my workshop that I used to shoot squirrels many moons ago that I plan on using. I'll take to a proshop to have them check it and get a new string for it. I was getting tied of all the speed hype and gadgets associated with compounds so I sold mine and hope to really get into Traditional bowhunting.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

My primary hunting bow is a 62" Chek-Mate Hunter II pulling 65# @ 32", with a Cocobolo riser and Yew limbs. I shoot it off a Flipper II rest with a 14 strand endless Dyna 97 string and two half sets of cat whiskers. There's small Limbsavers on it too.

Arrows are full length Beman ICS Camo Hunters with 125 grain Thunderheads and 4 4" left wing helical feathers.

I use a Kwikee Kwiver and a PSE tab.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

LOL, Lurp, I have gone to Traditional For the Same Reasons, plus the added challenge. Sounds like your bow is very similar to mine. From around the same time period. I inherited mine from my father (RIP), this past year. He insisted starting me off traditional when I was a kid, but I went the way of technolgy for years. Just getting back to my roots now.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

My primary shooter is a 66" Chek-Mate Crusader takedown LB with DF97 string that's 54# @28". I placed a seal skin hair on shelf and strike plate rest on it and shoot 29" 2016 aluminums with the Easton glue in broadhead adapter inserts and 125g points or Zwickey Eskimo broadheads. I put a Selway Quick Detach 4 arrow bow quiver on the bow and use a whitetail back quiver. I also shoot bamboo and cedar arrows from the bow and have found that a 60/65 cedar with 160g broadhead flies extremely well from the bow and that's probably how I'll be going in the future. I use a black hole broadhead target for my practice but don't recommend it for much broadhead shooting. The slim design of the target allows the head to eat it up fast so that passthroughs become common after a hundred or so shots. I use a latigo tab.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

Lurp, be careful about taking the bow to a compound proshop. If that is all they deal in, they may not know any more about your Bear bow than you do. Shoot LBR an email and he can help you with string length and find someone near you that shoots sticks so they can examine the bow for you.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

Wahya: Thanx for the info & heads-up! I have 3 archery shops nearby and I'll check to see if they indeed know anything about Traditional bows. I also believe the string info is stamped on the bow along with the weight.

My primary bow is a 66" Crusader longbow, [email protected]"--Cocobolo riser, Yew limbs. Rogue River POC shafts, Dynaflight string, Damascus glove. I have a Catquiver III, but haven't used it much yet. Have been using a side quiver, have used back quivers in the past and they are just not comfortable to me. I have Wensel Woodsman, Ribtek, and Steel Force broadheads, and plan on getting some Magnus.

Lurp Dog, Good for you man! Simple sticks are alot of fun. Byron's book gives some great information, btw.

My setups:
Selfbows (mostly osage).
Wooden arrows (including fir, larch, maple, hickory, whatever's in my ammo depot).
Wensel Woodsman broadheads for deer, whatever's on hand for small stuff.
Deerskin glove.
Backquivers for general shooting, Jack's "Chief" side quiver for hunting and some 3-D's.

My latest selfbow..."Big Warrior", 62", 70# @ 25".

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

Right now my primary hunting & 3D bow is "Ole#1", a Black Widow MAII (62"er, 63# @ 30") that I got in Dec '91. I have several other bows that I love shooting, including another BW t/d curve & a fairly new Morrison Dakota longbow that is trying hard for 1st place in my stable. As for arrows I shoot RRA tapered cedars w/125 gr Magnus, Zwickeys, or Snuffers. I've had some (but limited) experience w/aluminum arrows & broadheads of other weights/make. I use either a calfskin tab or glove to protect my drawing fingers from my (horrendous of late) release. I'd like to try a good cordovan tab, anyone know who sells a good one?

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

LD,

I have two recurves at present.
My first was a Dakota Recurve 62" long 54# @29" but pull 57# @30"
It shoots extremely accurate for me. It has a black/yellow Micarta riser with Bocote limbs.
My second bow is a 68" Sley recurve
60# @30" It has a Cocobolo/Bocote riser and bamboo limbs.
It's a really beautiful bow, to me.
Got a Trails End on order; due in October. Medicine Point with Bocote riser and Cocobolo accent with pierce points.
I use a Black Widow yellow shooting glove and a Widow three-under tab.
Only been shooting traditional 7 months so won't be hunting until this fall and haven't decided on a quiver or broadheads. Use weighted ACC arrows. Not traditional but really accurate.
Sorry for the ramble.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

The only thing I shoot is Howard Hill Longbows and 160gr HH broadheads. There are other longbows and broadheads I like just as well but none of them help me shoot any better so I just stick with what works for me. I also like to collect HH Longbows and collectables.

Thanks Cam. That group was from 15 yards (paces). I'm not that consistent or good, so my groups are usually a lot wider.<img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle> But, since I shot it I figured I'd better get a pic so I could remember it.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

I shoot a Fox reverse handle bow, Bocote/Cocobolo riser and Canarywood limbs. I put a sealskin rest and strikeplate on it.

I just received a new order of 59-60# tapered cedar arrows from RRA, yellow crown, orange cresting with black and silver trim, two orange and one barred yellow feathers, with 6 125 gr field points and 6 125 gr Magnus II heads. They are pretty and shoot great!!!

I don't have a quiver to use with this bow as of yet. I've been looking at a CatQuiver I and GN removable, but haven't settled on anything.

I shoot with a Damascus glove.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

I got one question.

With all of the bowyers and great bows that are available, how do you narrow it down to even the next 5 or 6 bows you are going to buy? Some of you fellas must have real understanding wives. If I had a dozen or so bows, it would be mighty cold at my house even in the dog days of August!

We got 5 bows in the house and I think one more will get ordered. Now, who exactly it will be for is still up in the air.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

arrowsmit 03-01-2002 04:34 PM

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

Bill, it gets much simpler after the first 5-6 bows. You have to practice the technique, but they can be moved around often enuff that you can eventually sneak in another one w/out her noticing! <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

arrowsmit 03-01-2002 06:21 PM

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

Oh yea, as for quivers I much prefer a bowquiver. Namely Selways & Thunderhorns. Have used a back quiver, side quiver, pocket quiver, & Catquiver. IMO the bow mounted quivers are much handier, add just enuff weight to aid in stability, & may even help to hide my draw from wary game animals.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

Strictly longbows. all Saxon's. My favorite is the newest, a takedown 64&quot; 57lb at 29 1/2&quot;
Osage riser, ash core under red elm.
Quivers for hunting are Raptor side and a home-made side.
For roving I have a back quiver that holds 48 arrows and a sandwich!
Several different quivers and designs. I love 'em and hang them on the walls

Bill,

That's why I refuse to marry my girlfriend.
I don't want any woman telling me I can't buy a bow. No way, lol.
If it comes down to her or a bow, it's going to be the bow, lol.
I feel the same way as John does with going with all Saxon Longbows.
If I had it to do over, I would only own Sleys.

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

Shootin an Adcock three piece longbow, 64&quot; and 66&quot; limb sets, Bolivian Rosewood riser and Tonkin Cane limbs. 64&quot; limb set is pulling arund 52# at my draw of 29.5. The 66&quot; set is coming and will pull around 58#.

Have used XX75 arras since forever. 2018s are just dandy for this bow. This year I am trying (again) woodies. Got some real nice ones from Troy Breeding at Stick 'n String. Shot again some today and also shot my 2018s. The woodies seem to fly real well but my groups are not there yet.

Ace Standard 125gr broadheads and a few 125gr Snuffers.

The most versatile quiver I have used thus far is the side quiver (not hip). There are a few good ones out there, I have a
SideStalker and an &quot;Adcock Stalker&quot; made by Art Vincent. The latter is, in my opinion, the best option for many reasons.

Tony

RE: NEWBIE question; What equipment are you using?

Tony, how do you like that Ace broadhead? I was thinking about going with their 160g head. I've got some from the 50s and they fly great from a 60/65 shaft and sharpen up easy. Any problems getting the newer heads spooky sharp?

Mike
