Default should i give it a try?

hi i have never shot a recurve in my life. yet i have been shooting compounds for about 4 years now. i have just grew out of my old bow that i killed one deer with. it only goes up to 45 pounds and i would like a 50 pound pull. soooo i got to thinking of giveing these recurves a try. what are some good bows out there that would be good? also how easy is this? i have never shot a bow that didn't have sights [:-] do you think it would be easy for me to pick up?

one of the reasons that got me thinking about one is i have trouble using releases and i only use my fingures to shoot a bow... can you do this with a recurve?

any help would be great!!

oo and i forgot i am 14

i just found a Aim Deer Slayer Recurve Bow for 300 on cabelas let the lightest pull is 50....if i can pull 50 on a compound can i get 50 on a recurve? or should i use a 45??

i would be looking for a bow less then 600 yet i really like the wood on this Aim Deer Slayer Recurve Bow are there any others that have laminated wood or really nice looking wood in a good hunting bow??

The AIM bow, like all other production bows, is poundage rated at 28" draw. That's the old AMO standard. If your draw length is shorter than 28", you're draw weight will be less. If it's longer, it'll be more. Figure on 2-3 pounds per each inch under or over 28". Say your draw length is 26", your draw weight on a 50# @ 28" bow will be between 44-46 pounds. If your draw weight is 30", that same bow will draw 54-56 pounds.

That's just one of the many good things about recurves... You can't hardly grow out of one. The draw length and poundage grow with you.

Honestly, can't any of us say for a certainty what draw weight you can handle. Start at your state's minimum hunting weight and work from there. It's far better to have a bow that's a little light for you than one that's a little too heavy for you to handle well.

There are so many bows out there now that it's very hard to recommend just a few. They run the gammut from plain Jane knockabout bows to beautiful works of art.... and the prices go from affordable to nearly enough to cancel the national debt. AIM makes a decent enough bow. Martin's Damon Howatt line is better. And Bear is still putting out recurves. I'd rank 'em for design and quality as #1 Martin, #2 Bear and #3 AIM. AIM is real close to giving you the most production bow for your dollar though.

I'd definitely recommend holding back most of that $600 until you've shot a recurve awhile, have had the opportunity to shoot several different recurves, and have a better idea of what you like.

Get a copy of Traditional Bowhunter magazine and thumb thru it. Look at the ads. Check out the websites. One I definitely recommend is www.recurves.com for Chek-Mate bows.

Killer, good on you. I think you will really enjoy a recurve. You have to remember there is no let off on a recurve so you will be holding what ever weight your drawlength determines. If the bow weight is too heavey it is harder to shoot well. All that said at your age you will be getting stronger all the time while us old farts get weaker. If you had an opportunity to shoot a recurve a few times it might help determine a starting weight for you.

You may want to go used to start. Like Arthur said, hunting minimum is a good place to start.

Chek mate makes a really good bow and Chad at recurves.com is a good fella to deal with. Everyone else allready hit the important parts. Don't overbow yourself to start with and welcome to having fun not just shooting!

Killer ,
I'm also new to them , and I say go for it . If there's a shop or trad club near you then try as many as you can to find the weight that suits you , this will also give you the chance to compare brands and configurations . I started with an ancient 40# Shakespeare Wonderbow and then got a PSE Kudu with 50# limbs for $250 at Cabela's . I like both bows and shoot them both about equally .

thanks a lot guys i am using my uncles old #40 that is about 4 years old. i broght it to a shop had it checked and put a new string on it. i think i am shooting it very well for my first day ever shooting one! i am still shooting a little high at under 15 yards but out to 30 i can hit pretty close to the middle! i can't wait till i get the feel down i buy a true recurve from chad he seems to be a great guy to deal with.

thanks! to all of you who got those little ideas flooting in my head
