I shot my first NFAA 300 Indoor Round today. What a blast! I've never shot in a real target competition before. This was a Tri-County Shoot; Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties (the 3 counties in Metro Detroit Area). BIG difference between shooting practice and real competition. My palms were sweating, big time. When you're standing cheek to jowl with 30-40 archers on the line, and another line behind you watching, all of a sudden you forget everything you've ever learned and find yourself just flinging arrows if you're not careful. I was as nervous as if a 10 pointer was standing 20yrds from me, instead of a blue face target. If you've never tried it, you really ought to.

The American round was always one of my favorites. We shot two versions of it for the IL Outdoor Target Championship, and 810 and a 900 round. Both the same only scored different. 30 arrows each at 40, 50, & 60 yards.
Jack, if you think the 300 round you shot was rough you should come down to Plainfield IL in two weeks for the NFAA Great Lakes Indoor Sectionals. It's the indoor target championship out of IL, WI, IN, OH, & MI.
The last time I shot one was when the Sectionals was in Mattoon IL in 1994. It was held in the gymnasium at the Nat'l Guard Armory. Double line, 100+ to a line. Every shot echos in the gym, shooters stacked together so tight you have to spin your quiver backwards not to poke the guy in front of you with your arrows. Cant that bow much and you'll be hitting two people with your limb tips.
If you're winning you're in trouble. That's when you get 2 or 3 of your closest competitors standing right on the spectator's line, just 5 yards behind you, watching your target through binoculars and calling each shot...and they ALWAYS call them out. Next they talk loudly amoung themselves about how poor your arrows are flying, your form, whatever. Next comes the endless arguments over miscalled arrows and getting the NFAA official over tell the next Yahoo that it's a FIVE...for the sixth time.
The best part is that if you do win you can walk up to Mr. Bad Attitude and say, "Thanks for almost making me work for it today. Y'all have a safe drive now."

Oh boy, JRW! I can envision it. As it was, I did slap the poor guy on my right twice with my limb tip. Fortunately he was a friend. I don't think I'm ready for that level of competition.

I just shot prolly my 3rd ever scored (not competition) 300 round last nite. Wow, the last time was back last year sometime & I think I like it even more now. Sure seems like a great way to work some kinks out of your form! I'm no where near ready for competition & maybe never will be but it is (like most "archery games"
very mesmerizing. Ya gotta love THAT!! Jason, ya think a FITA style bow & aluminum arrows could add 20-30 pts to a guys overall scoring average (vs a hunting set up w/wood arrows)? Sounds like a big jump to me, but I've never shot that type of equipment. There was a coach there (everyone claims he's on the olympic staff, name is Lanny sumthin) & he said that's what he thought. Maybe he had a bow for sale ya think?
