Longbow - wood type?
What type of wood do you prefer for your long bow - both riser and limbs.
I am considering getting a longbow made for myself in the near future and would like to hear your preferences.
I am pretty sure that I will be getting an Ebony Riser, what limbs do you feel would go well with it? So far I am considering Yew, Bamboo, or Tonkin Cane.

Cocobolo riser (good mass weight, beautiful wood), Yew limbs--super smooth. Depending on where the Yew comes from, it could be plain or gorgeous. If it is plain, you can always get veneers. I don't have any experience with Ebony--have only seen a little, and never shot or owned a bow with it in the riser.

Well as bad as I hate to ever agree with LBR on anything, he hit the nail on the head as far as the the wood preferences i would choose also. I would however maybe accent with some birdseye and curly maple but thats just my 2 cents worth!.......Jaw

You didn't say, but you can have it fast, pretty, or both, but they would all require different combos. I have a long draw, and have settled on Black locust back, bamboo core and yew belly with osage riser. Also like red cedar and ash.
My newest (takedown) is from Saxon, and randy used an ash core, edge grain elm back, and straight grain belly with phenolic overlays and feathering with a nice golden osage riser. I believe it is the fastest 64inch longbow I've ever used. I plan to commit mass murder with it this month on Javalina.....

Oh, pick me ! pick me !!
I LOVE bocote wood - hard, heavy and beautiful. Cocobolo is very popular, as is shedua. Ebony would look great (dark though).
For limb laminates, OL sold me on the tonkin cane. I got mine under clear glass - I think the honey color is great. Only way I could get more performance would be to get a layer of carbon on the back - something I might very well do in the future.
I'd like an all american bow too - walnut and maple riser, yew or walnut limbs - something like that ... that'd be cool

Ebony and cocabola are two of my favorite longbow riser woods. Limb veneers don't matter much to me as long as they're covering bamboo, red elm, or yew cores. I think ebony riser w/bocate limb veneers makes a gorgeous combo, or cocabola riser w/yew or red elm limbs, and bloodwood makes sharp accents over ebony, and...heck the nice looking combos are almost endless. Come to think of it, I never met a bow I didn't like!

LOL JB, how I wish that were true, I've sure seen a whole bunch over the years I'd loved to have owned. Ya know, some folks collect hot rods, some collect rare coins...heck I can't even afford to keep up a very modest bow collection. <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Right now, my three favorite woods for risers are cocobolo, bocote and macassar ebony. To me, macassar is the best and most beautiful of the ebony woods. It is a bit expensive but worth it. My next Sley will probably have a macassar riser.
