With deer season upon us - Has anyone harvested a deer? I recently hunted in Western Kansas and even though I saw lots of deer (25-30 in 2 days) I did not see one worth harvesting yet - I guess there is just to much time in the season left to wait for the" The Big One" I' m also waiting on my new chekmate to arrive (Chad) to see what it can do -
Thanks

September 20th at 6:45 pm I took a velvet 3-point on a buddy of mine' s property in Juneau County, WI. I wasn' t going to shoot him, but I' ve always wanted to take a whitetail in velvet.
He string-jumped and took the first arrow through the spine. The second shot got both lungs and ended it quickly. Shot distance was about 10 yards, recovery was length was zero.

October 4th at 7:40 I put a Zwickey through the chest of a button buck in Kendall County, Illinois. He had a pre-existing injury, so I decided to take him out. I wasn' t sure how he' d fare up over the winter. Shot distance was 17 yards. He went about 50 yards and collapsed.
The doe that was leading him turned to see what happened and I put one through her heart and both lungs. She made it less than 20 yards past the button buck and went down. Shot distance on her was 20 yards.
Both deer left heavy bloodtrails.
My 6-year old daughter came out to track the deer, and found them both. She was so happy you' d have thought it was Christmas morning. Me? I was butchering deer most of Sunday. I forgot how much work two of them are in one day, but the venison tacos we had for dinner were great!

I shot the biggest doe I' ve seen in a long time (130-140#) a few evenings ago. Used ' Ole#1' & one of those trusty RRA tapered cedars w/a Zwickey on the end. I bet she didn' t go 40 yds. I wish I' d gotten a picture of the whole deer, but only got this:

Well, not ' success' in the strictest sense, but I had a 3 pt, a button, & a doe around me for (seemed like) an hour this evening. I ' counted coup' on the 3 pt twice, holding on him at full draw, then letting down both times. Awful hard not to drop the string, but we only get ONE buck tag here so I passed. I thought about doing that on the doe, but with unlimited doe tags & one already in the freezer, I knew better. >GRIN< Anyhow, I had a wonderful evening hunt & that is success of sorts, right?
We' re having a heck of a mast year here, with acorns dropping everywhere! Foliage is starting to get nice color here now, the air is crisp, & I' m finding more rubs all the time. Here' s hoping everyone is having a successful season so far & is enjoying the beautiful Autumn woods. God, I LOVE this time of year!
Happy Trails,

Congrats to everyone. I' ve only been able to get out once
. With work and the house being torn up for remodeling I don' t have a spare minute. Did get out Monday. Took my two boys (8 and 10), grabbed the longbow and went to the woods. Walking in to a spot I wanted to check out we stumble across 2 dozen turkeys. Lucky I have a fall archery turkey tag. They' re about 80 yards out in a field. The boys wanted me to get one. My only route was to walk the edge of the field and try and sneak up on them, yeah right [X(]. They busted out before I could sneak 20 yards doing my best impression of a tree
Oh well. Hope to get out this weekend. I envy you evil[>:] ones that just saw a deer
PS: My boys asked, how come you didn' t sneek up on them like they do on TV[
