Well I went bear hunting a few weeks ago in Maine. Wanted to get a bear with my longbow. Shot 2 with my compound, 1 being a Pope and Young but wanted a new challange.
Started shooting a longbow about a year ago. Started off with a longbow because the archery shop said I was too big to shoot a recurve. Geeezz, I' m only 6' 2" and 275 lb, I' m not like Chad or anything
. Well that' s another story.
When the other hunters saw the longbow, I heard things like, " can you really kill something with that?" , " wow, never saw anyone shoot one of those" , " will that go thru a bear?" , " can you hit anything without sights?" . Well after they watched me practice they were starting to come around. Even had a " compound" guy start to pratice with me[
] Started calling me Robin Hood
Day 1
I was siting in a big spruce tree and was surrounded with branches. It was one of the most awesome stands I' ve ever been in. There were really thick spruce to my left up to the bait. To my right it was a mix of spruce and small trees. In front of me was a 20' x 20' clearing area with the bait about 15 yards in front of me.
Had 2 cubs come in at 6:00 pm. Really fun to watch. Couldn' t figure out where momma was. Then I heard a growl, popping of teeth and the trees to my right came crashing down, there was momma about 5 yards or so from my stand jumping around and making noise. I didn' t move and she gave up after about 5 minutes and went into the bait with the cubs. About 15 minutes later to my right I heard a load growl and almost jumped out of my stand. A big boar had snuck in to my left and was less than 5 yards from me thru the thick spruce. Momma sent the cubs up a tree. They pissed and moaned at each other for about a half-n-hour. Then the boar made his way toward the bait. All I could see was black moving thru the trees. Momma met him behind the spruce to my left and they went at it like 2 really big cats. Then it got dark. Guide said to wait for him to come in if there were bears. So I waited for about 30 minutes, no guide, getting board. Shined my light at the bait and there was momma and then I heard the boar. Sat some more. Decided to make a little noise and try to push them out. Hit my bow on the stand as I started to get down. Heard momma come crashing thru the woods popping her teeth. Decided to get back into the stand. Finally got out about 30 minutes later.
Day 2
No bear
Day 3
A film crew who was trying to break into the video/TV/being famous biz was shooting video with our guide. They asked to come along with me to get a trad guy on video. Said sure
Set up his stand directly above me in the spruce. Sow came in at 6:00 pm, left after about 15 minutes. Then out of nowhere the boar jumps out of the bushes 7 yards in front of the stand and looks at us curling his lips. Then turns toward the bait, gives us last look and disappears. We know it was 7 yards cause he was halfway between the bait and us. Cameraman got great video. No chance for a shot. Within 10 minutes he was back. Walked around the bait and over to a 5 gallon bucket of donuts hanging about 3 foot up a tree. Stood up nocked an arrow and got ready. Okay start the music, da, dum, da ,dum, da ,dum. The bear stands up and leans against the tree, what a great shot. Well Robin Hood draws and shoots......right over his back[
]. Perfect left right. Bear growls and jumps behind the bait. Sniffs the arrow and walks around to the other side. Robin Hood nocks another arrow. The bear stands up on the other side of the bait, wow what a great shot. Well Robin Hood draws shoots.... and shoots over his back again[
][:@]. The bear jumps behind the bait and lays down. The cameraman wisphers to me you missed him both times, but I got it on video. I wisphered back several things that can' t be printed. Figured it was over. All those months of practice. But no the bear was back. I grab my third and last arrow in my quiver. Only brought 3 with me. Figured it only took 1, right. Bears comes out and is standing perfectly broadside at 13 yards eating donuts. Robin Hood takes a deep calming breath, draws his 54# @ 29" Selway Lil Magnum longbow and Trad lite arrow back as smooth as silk. Comes to his anchor, holds, concentrates on a hair on the boars side and releases. Twack, wow sounds like a great hit. The bear jumped up at the shot. Cameraman says just a little dark for the camera but it sounded good. Don' t hear the death moan but the woods are dead quite. Robin Hood sneaks down from the stand. There in the center of the tree the bear was standing 2 yards in front of is our heroes arrow. But alas, no blood[
][
]. We look, how could of it have possibly missed????? Looks like the bear jumped just as I released and now Robin Hood missed low
. And all on video. 2 of the arrows tipped with 175 grain ACE heads were buried a foot below the ground and stuck in roots. Took 10 minutes of digging and a broken kife tip to retrieve. The last arrow had a 4 blade steel force buried up to its threads. The camera man and everyone was amazed at the penetration. Screwed off my arrow and left a momento in the tree.
Well we went to camp and one of the guys had a TV in his camper so everyone got to see my hunt. Beautiful video of Robin Hood drawing his bow, the flight of a Trad lite painted white against the black fur of the bear and then....nothing.
Day 4
No bears
Day5
Cameraman with me again. Rain, no bears
Well they have named the stand after me " 3 Arrows" . The video crew is going to edit up the film, add music and some slomo and give me acopy. I' ll be glad to share it with anyone that would like to see[&:]
Funny thing. I had been practicing at 20 yards all summer as the guide said his stands were set up at that distance. I asked if he could set one up alittle closer for me. When I saw the stand at 15 yards I had a bear target with me and was praticing at 15 yards. When I missed I was missing high!!!!
Well deer season is open. I' ll be taking more than 3 arrows

Man CT, sounds like a great hunt none the less. Too bad you didnt stick one with the camera rolling. But, just think, you' ll remember those misses for the rest of your life.

Maybe you should try your hand at moose hunting with me, then maybe you' ll have less chance of shooting over top of them.
Sounds like you had a good time at any rate.
I cant wait to hear your deer hunting stories. [>:]

Wow CT, thanks for sharing your hunt. How big was the boar you shot at? Man, I' d like to get a biggun someday, maybe even a color phase. But alas, money is tight & time is always in short supply. Thanks again for letting us sorta live your hunt thru your words.

This boar was about 250#. According to the guide that was a good size boar for that area. Shot 2 up in Sasacktuan(?). 1 a 400# black, made P&Y and a 300# chocolate color, just missed P&Y. The chocolate is realllllllllly pretty. No problem on sharing the hunt. My wife can' t believe I actually tell anyone...LOL.
