My post is strictly for bowhunting. If you shoot directly off the shelf, feathers. If you use an elevated rest, vanes. As a bowhunter, I shoot feathers off the shelf.

a recurve or long bow should be shot with feathers in my opinion, ever see Robin Hood with quick spins!

Feathers 100% for me. Natural turkey feathers are the best. That is when ive tagged a turkey and have a supply of them.

I prefer feathers,
but do like the durability of vanes

Vanes are not as pliable, will tend to deflect the arrow upon launch more readily than would a feather if there is any interference. Hence the suggestion of using vanes from an elevated rest, where interference may be more easily mitigated. I've not shot vanes from my bows, only have 1 with a NAP flipper on it, but have been tempted because they are so much more forgiving than natural feathers in the wet weather. But, as most others, that benefit is of limited value as most folks don't bow hunt while it's raining. And because feathers can still be effective even if a little wet, and can be kept covered realitively easily.

Turkey and goose feathers will not fold when they become wet. That is why I prefer them. Recently, Ive had to use painted chicken feathers. I solve the folding while wet problem by simply spraying them with silicone.

I have really just started shooting traditional bows.I got the bow I have now because an old man told me that shooting traditional equipment is fun, and it was.
