It really depends. Nowadays you can get longbows with recurve grips and vice versa. But usually the older bows were made a little different. And personally I like the differences.

Personally, I grip my longbows with my palm pointing upward and the center of pressure of the bow on the lower portion of the palm. Try doing this, put your bow arm in a position parallel to the floor, put your thumb in a position pointing straight up. Relax your bow hand. Now make a fist with your draw hand and try pushing the bow hand at the lower part of the palm. I bet your wrist won't move, just the whole arm. That is kind how how I grip a longbow. Now the recurve, leave your bow arm parellel to the floor again, now keep your thumb and index finger paralell to the floor also. But a slightly bending down force in your wrist (just a little), and relax the hand. Now make a fist with your draw hand, put it in the "V" formed from your thumb and index finger on your bow hand, push hard with your draw hand. Again, not much give in the wrist.

Another question regarding the string/sighting. Does one put in the little rear peep sight (the one on the string of most compounds)? Also, on the string is there the little metal deal (no idea what it's called [:@]) that the arrow nock sits against, you know, where the arrow sits against and then our fingers or release goes too. Or am I just smokin crack and confusing everyone?

There are no rear peeps on recurve, longbow or hybrid bowstrings. The onlything onthe bowstring is a nokset that your arrownock touches against.You look at a spot on a target you want to hit and if you have thegift ofpureinstinctive shootingor patience to learn instinctive shooting, the arrow will be close to where you're looking at. Secondly, I think all traditional bowhunters cant their bows either to the left or right. In other words, the bow isn't held vertically like a compound bow. I cant my recurve bow in the two o'clock position.

I have no idea what the AE 5116 means, so can someone please fill me in. And thanks to all for those who keep posting helping me out!
