Default Using a rifle?

I was suprised to learn that in Texas you can use a rifle to shoot turkey in the fall season. If I had known this earlier, I could have easily shot one from about 50 yards away while I was walking to my deer blind Saturday afternoon.

My question is where do you shoot them to not destroy the breast meat? I've already shot my deer and I'm thinking about going back out to try to shoot a turkey.

I've got a few of them!

Another quick thought, if you are using a rifle do you use any kind of special bullets? I only have a 7mm Rem Mag, a .22 LR and a .17 HMR to pick from.

I don't think that the .17 will be powerful enough to drop a bigger turkey. If there is a smaller one out there, then you may be able to, but you will need to get a good solid shot on one. The 7 mm mag will probably be too much. Out of the three rifles you listed, I would go with the .22, however, I would choose to do it with a shotgun. That's half the fun...getting up close and personal

Nathan, go for a head shot. Whichever one you feel is the most accurate for the distance you will be shooting. I would probably go with the 17HMR or the 7 mag

I hunt fall turkey with a rifle. I have a Marlin 17 HMR and a CZ .204 Ruger. They both ahve high magnification scopes on them. My dad uses a .223. We always go for a head shot. A 17 HMR round goes straight through a turkey and wont kill them with a body shot. Well i prob will if you hit them just right but it is hard. Its easier to shoot about 1in above where the neck and feathers start.

I wonder how a 22 mag hollow point would do on a turkey

A friend of mine hunts with a .22 LR for turkeys (headshots, of course) and he's never lost a bird that way. I'm more of a shotgunner myself.

Naw, I don't mess around with cartridges,I just call themin, and then toss a grenade into the flock, in this way, I don't have toworry about recoil.
