Winter Plot - Wheat & Oats - Pictures
Well, back in the fall I planted about 5 acres in wheat and oats around my house just to see what happened. The county I live in doesn't have a deer season and in the previous 6 years we have only seen 5 deer around the house. This winter we saw for sure 14 different deer (I saw 12 at one time on the plot) and 20 total. (6 could have been the same deer more than once). So even though I don't get to shoot them I consider the plot a success. I'm hoping that it will help the quail this summer also and maybe even last long enough for some dove in the fall.
I didn't take a soil sample before planting but this used to be a cotton farm ages ago and has pretty good soil. The limiting factor here tends to be moisture. I didn't fertilize and mainly it was just a big experiment. Well, lucky for me we got some good rain this spring and the wheat and oats turned out great. They are just starting to head out and look really good.
Here are some pictures of the progress.
September 18, 2006 - Just Planted:
(I left some hurting sorghum standing in the middle to see if it would make at all)
October 19, 2006 - At least it came up!
February 21, 2007 - Got some snow - wheat is perking up. (That's my 2 month old son in the stroller and our 10 month old rotweiler)
(This is about the stage where it got the most attention of the deer)
April 10, 2007 - After 3 inches of rain over the last few weeks. (Same stroller and same dog but the dog is a year old now)
I just thought I would share. I was pretty shocked by the growth the last month and a half!
