Any News yet from the ATA show

Has any body got any news yet from the ATA show?

I am interested in the new Mathews called the "CopyCat" or something to that effect.

Based on what I've seen from then so far, they'd have to drop a pretty big bomb from their sleeve to get me looking their way in '04...

I have to laugh at you guys. You make it sound like Mathews will be lucky to be in business by this time next year. You/we all know better than that. I happen to think (as does/will many thousands of people) that Mathews has "done it again". MQ1shooter, is there anything positive you can say about anything? Most of your posts are negative. We all have opinions. Only some of us have open minds.

Greg / MO 01-22-2004 06:18 PM

RE: Any News yet from the ATA show

You truly crack me up, BB9! I can tell you don't follow much of my postings.

Of the thousands I've posted on these boards, I would have to say less than a handful have been of the negative slant. (Yes, that number would be correct; I've been around long enough to last through two or three crashes of this site.)

I would think some would find it refreshing that someone wouldn't blindly laud a manufacturer and their latest releases just because they happen to shoot one of that company's particular bows.

RE: Any News yet from the ATA show

Well I didn't take the digicam.. so I apologize.. might take it one of the other days this weekend.

AR will have the 31,34,37 w/ a new cam and 1/2 along w/ the singles from last year.

New spott hogg sight is really nice!!! Aiming point moves up/down by twisting the rectical. Has 3 different lenses inside and actually bends the light. Also have a new sight light that mounts to the to 2 holes in their previous sights where the shade attaches. Saw Hoggler.. but he was busy w/ a vendor.

Shot the new Freedom cam Bowtech Liberty along w/ '04 pro40 dually. Then the shooting lanes got shut down before I got a chance to shoot the rest. And watched one of the guys shoot a "custom" dually at 358fps on the "high" letoff w/ 67# and 350gr arrow. They said he shot 362fps w/ the "low" letoff mods. Got to meet a bunch of the AT/hunting.net Bowtechies (Jeff, Bowtechshooter, MattPA, 500FPS, ect...) also which was really cool. Bows were all impressive

Also got to shoot the new Parker Phoenix 34 and 34 easy draw.. . both very nice bows.

Flex Fletch has a new 4" low profile vane for the IBO bowhunter class guys that have to have a 4" vane. It's about 1/2 the height of a standard vane.

Crimson Talon has a few new offerings this year. A 2 blade version of the normal head. A 2 blade cut on impact. And a 2 blade cut on impact w/ 2 additional mechanical blades. The blades are thicker on the 2 blade and cut on impact models.

Montec has a new broadhead that's 85gr and looks very similar to the G5... but the cut outs behind the blades are only cut on one angle for an airfoil type effect.. supposed to make it spin I guess.. And they've adressed the sharpness issue. They will come from the factory razor sharp now. They also had a nice new 2 blade model.

Also saw the new plastic vanes (forget manufacturer) that have a little air foil on the back that imparts much more spin than standard helical. You fletch them straight and they spin ALOT. One side had a bunch of little ridges that ran in line w/ the arrow.. and the other side was smooth. On the rear there's a little plastic airfoil. I'll try to get pics to explain it better.

That's about all I can remember right now off the top of my head. I'm sure others will chime in w/ their observations.

MQ1shooter, Just popped open a couple of threads besides this one to see what kind of feedback you have given. Not a lot out there to look at but in regards to "Mathews Classic Specs sneak peak" and "Mathews Outback" both were mostly negative.
Look at my posts. Should be easy as they are all fairly recent. You'll find while I have my opinion I am not a basher like you. I tend to give credit to all companies that make improvements in technology.
Its great that you think the MQ1 is the best thing since sliced bread. Lots of people agree with you, lots don't. To say the new bows whether they are Mathews or not haven't improved or are, as you say "a hodgepodge of other parts" is way off base.

Greg / MO 01-22-2004 07:26 PM

RE: Any News yet from the ATA show

BB9, if you think that's bashing, you're gonna get your feelings hurt a lot harder here on these forums!

I'm sorry I didn't come back and spew superlatives after shooting the Outback, but I called it like I saw it: too much heft for my liking and too narrow a valley ... again, for my likes.

Seems a lot of other people felt that way after examining the bow first-hand. Makes me glad, though, to find out that that's what you call bashing! I thought I may have seriously offended someone.

Bashing?[:o]

Sounds to me like some guys actually have some ideas of the type of bow that they would like to be offered by one of the major manufacturers of archery equipment. Seems like the company isn't listening, or isn't offering what is wanted or expected, leading to disappointment.;)

Some manufacturers actually try to make an effort to find out what prospective customers want and would buy, while others have a more "This is our line, take it or leave it." approach. Actually, it seems like more manufacturers have the second attitude than the first.:(

Of course, they are all trying to get some of our $ to change hands.;)

Done what? It seems the reviews are pretty mixed on the 04 offerings. Check out archerytalk and see what I mean.

RE: Any News yet from the ATA show

A guy comes on, happens to own and shoot a Mathews, shows disappointment in the new line-up, and he is the bad guy?

Just because you shoot a certain brand of bow doesn't mean that you have to like everything that they offer.

I shot a BowTech MightyMite last year, I was the one that told Kevin that I would like to see a VFT version of the MightyMite. Well, he went and designed one. I shot it this year, and it was an improvement, but, I didn't buy it. It didn't seem like a big enough improvement over the standar MightyMite. This is just my opinion. I know that it is a great bow and that many many guys will like it, but it is MY OPINION!!!!!!! Just ask Frank what he thinks of his.

MQ1, I commend you for saying what you feel about Mathews new line-up. It shows that you aren't stuck on one brand and you aren't willing to praise everything the company does just because you shoot one of their bows!!!!!!

I havn't shot the new Mathews. I would like to, but I probablly wont. I am more than pleased with my BowTech and all of the Mathews that I have shot just didn't do anything for me. They are great bows, but they just didn't feel right, probablly due to the grip. From what I have heard, Phil is right, some guys love the new Mathews while others are disappointed. Each person has their own opinion!!!!

I can't count the number of times I've seen on here and elsewhere: "The MQ1 was the best bow Mathews ever made". Or, "Nothing they make now compares to my MQ1". And even "Why don't they make an MQ1 with the dampers etc."
I think they did listen to what people were saying, figured out they could re-build (and maybe improve) something a lot of people liked and make money in doing so. The name even implies there won't be too much new and exciting about it.:)

There is a big difference between bashing and being critical of a manufacturer. Once the difference is learned, there is a dramatic drop in the amount of bashing noticed.

Ok. Just saw a picture of it. In regards to my above post, keep the part about people liking the MQ1. In the second paragraph, change "did listen" to "didn't listen", cross out "maybe improve", but keep the part about making money.
At least I was right with the last sentence!!!!!:D
I gotta say I can't believe it, but it's true. It looks just like my buddies FX!

I don't know if this bow is gonna make it to production or not.. they told me that it was a custom machined riser... I don't know if it's just a concept or someone just playing around w/ different designs. But it was pretty sweet!

Oh yeah.. forgot to mention that it was at like a 28 3/4 or 29" draw to boot!

All these Mathews shooters doubting Mathews, and how they made a big mistake, they are building on their bows, getting rid of the ones that are obsolete, that don't have the newer technology, some have not shot any, and they are already disappointed, yeah well you do not know how good or bad it is unless you have shot it!

You all expect TOO much from Mathews after all of these years, the reason the Liberty from Bowtech is such a big hit, is it is a brand new bow, you all think Mathews is going to come out with the perfect bow made just for you, well they don't! Mathews does not listen to the public that much, they are going against all the other companies, trying to match them or beat them, like Hoyt and the Vipertec, or Bowtech and the MM VFT!! Those are the companies they are going against, they noticed their SQ2 was outdated, and fixed that by making the Outback! Thank them for coming out with new bows! And go out and shoot them, then make your presumptions about the bow(s)!!;)[:@]

I'd say not at all is more to the point. Old Matt knows what's best for the public. And expects them to swallow it, no questions asked.

RE: Any News yet from the ATA show

Just to clarify about the BowTech bow (btw..nice BS'ing w/ ya Ken)...

It's a production BK riser (2004) unfinished (silver)..had some camo limbs on it. It's Kevin Strother's BK. He shot it several times through the whole show. By Saturday evening and some tweaking it ended up like this:

29.25" AMO draw. 69 pounds. 349.9 grain arrow. higher letoff (65%) mods:360 FPS. All measured/verified right in front of my eyes by Norb Mullaney.:D

55% modules shot 365 FPS.

Just for grins Kev took the point out of one of the heavier (425 grain arrows), and stripped some fletches, and ended up w/ a 300. something grain arrow. That shot 378 FPS.

Imagine what it would do with one of those 225 grain HCA arrows & a 30" AMO draw length ! [:o]

And believe it or not, the bow was not overly loud.

EDIT: as an addendum, the production BKs we had at the shooting booth (29"/70s) shot 338-344 FPS all day long. They were not long either.

I heard Diamond has a new model (Gladiator or something like that), that IBOs at 328. Not the fastest bow on the planet, but it does have a 7" brace.

RE: Any News yet from the ATA show

I just got in also, great show, very busy!

I got to meet a few of the local board members, but only briefly as we were running like chickens much of the weekend like other manufacturers. 500fps stopped by, so did Matt, Len, and I saw Pat (bowtechshooter) during lunch at Champions. OKbowhntr was there, RobVos, and too many to list really...I know I missed alot of guys and I apologize for not mentioning you here. Never got a chance to meet JeffB and others tho and that was unfortunate-- we'll have to do that next time.;)

The Merlins' new Syntech design limb laminates were a buzz, we had most manufacturers stopping by to take a peek, including Kevin and Stacey while they were out for a stroll. Some others really got in-depth about the entire process, took pics, and asked many questions. Norb Mullaney was by, along with other techs and industry people. We also had Larry Wise in the booth with us all weekend, as he chooses to shoot Merlin also. We were very pleased with the response and our dealer list is definately growing!:)

The Max Xtreme was shot by alot of people and got the big thumbs up from everyone--they all went "WOW".

We also hardly got out to do any buying or mingling ourselves, I had my staff take care of most of it this year-- unfortunately I had to spend most of the weekend in the booth or the demo area. Perils of being in business![8D]

Great time, great people, and beat the snow when we left. What more can you ask for?:) Good shooting, Pinwheel 12

I'll try to get a pic in here, but I have trouble sometimes so we'll see how it goes-- Here is a pic of some of the bows with me discussing them (and hiding behind the rack) with Nibal Achkar, CEO of APA Ultimate rests, who also put some of his rests on our bows. (nice rests, thanks, Nibal!)

Kevin,

Those are some nice looking bows and some great pics. Now I have another reason to regret missing the show.

RE: Any News yet from the ATA show

Sorry I did not get by Kevin. I usually was only able to see stuff that was on the way to the bathroom or by the concession stand..you guys were on the other side!:)

Kevin Strother/BowTech and the Diamond guys are real tight. They came over and hung out for a bit and shot the BowTechs, and Kevin Strother said Diamond had a new wheel bow that was pretty nice.

WWAG,

Target colors were very nice. Most folks seemed to like the Red better, but I thought the Blue was much prettier. It's one of the prettiest competition color bows I've ever seen.

As for a speed challenge, Every time Kevin pulled the bow out a big crowd would gather..dealers, other manufacturers, us, etc. I heard folks talking about it in the bathroom and when I went to get a soda or lunch. People were aware.:)

Jeff-

Yep, you were like me--the only time I got a chance to look at anything was if I took the time to skirt the new products showcase on the way to the demo area. We'll hook up eventually.

I did get to speak with Ted Nugent, Myles Keller, Chuck Adams, and a few others, but not anywhere near as many as I usually do.

The Diamond guys had some nice stuff, all mostly built on the Machete riser. I too was impressed with Parkers' new Phoenix lineup, they felt and shot great.

Those new quickspin vanes were nice as well--no more fletching contact and still get more spin than a tight helical! Sweet.

The "Bowboogers" silencers were a riot.

More as I can remember. ;) Pinwheel 12

Pinwheel, any idea if Diamond has any new cam offerings, or are all their new bow designs using the same PF cams of old?

Did you get to shoot the Max Extreme much? Did they let you take one home with you so you could put it through the paces and tell us all about it?

:)

Pinwheel 12 01-26-2004 10:22 AM

RE: Any News yet from the ATA show

Rangeball-

Diamond came out with two new bows--well really one with two cam options--which are called the Gladiator and Gladiator 2. It is 34" ATA, with 7" brace. The PF MP cam has an advertised IBO rating on this bow of 328. It also comes in the Gladiator 2 with new twin cams that are pretty smooth, 319 IBO rating on this bow. They also have 1/2 increments now available. Other than that the lineup remains the same as it was in 2003.

The Max-Xtreme is one of the smoothest and quietest bows I've ever shot, period. This bow is SWEET. All of Merlins' bows hold and shoot very well and don't exhibit any undue noise or shock but this thing is dead-nuts quiet--everyone who shot it just looked at it and went "wow, this thing is nice".

I won't have any for another week or possibly two-- I couldn't bring one back because we were flying and I didn't feel like buying yet another case and going through the extra hassle at the airports.

Norb Mullaney has one tho.;) As does Jon Silks and a few other "notables". Look for upcoming reports and articles in the months to come. I will report just as soon as I can get one here, but I CAN tell you one thing because I know you are anxious---I already know which bow will be going to my stands this year---my Hunters' Quest 31 with Whisper cams will soon be up for sale or placed on "backup bow" status. I don't even have to think about this decision after having shot this bow. Yes, they are that nice IMHO. Many others think so as well-- alot of the ones we had at the show walked out the door in dealers' hands, with many many more on order! ;) Good shooting, Pinwheel 12
