Do not use parachute cord. You can order it through Cabelas or Bass Pro or go the an archery shop and buys some. Most sell it by the foot.
Also, a lot of guys just melt a little button on the end of the cord to keep it from pulling through the knot. But take my advice and tie a simple overhand knot on each end of your D loop. And also, a great tool for making your loop tight is a pair of snap ring pliers. Tie your loop close to the string and the pliers will both stretch the loop material and tighten you knots.
Once you do it once or twice it will be easy.

Using just the melted button on the end of the material will work its true. But I've seen them wear and pull through the knot and pulling back even 50 lb and having the knot come out and hitting yourself in the face is not much fun. Not to mention the danger of an arrow taking off to parts unknown. A melted button after an overhand knot on each end of the D loop knot will never come out.

If your button on the end of your string is melted correctly then you will not have any issues with the knot comi g untied. Keep in mind the more string you use for all the knots bei g tied on, will cause your bow to slow down and come out of tune. Remember to always leave a small gap between the bottom knot and your arrow nock or else the D-loop will pinch your nock. Then you will have consistency issues.

Yeah, you NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER take a casual test drive of someone else's back-tension release!!!!!

Always always start with a training string and set the release tension as high as it goes and work your way down to your personal comfort zone.
