Shaft weight vs broad head weight
#1
I'm trying to determine what the heaviest grain head is I can use on my shafts without effecting the arrow flight. My current setup is I'm shooting a Hoyt Maxis at 55lbs with 28.5 Carbon Express Maxima shafts and a 85gr head. Sine I don't shoot heavy poundage I opted for a light setup in order to get the most speed.
Could I move up to say a 100gr head and it not be to much for the shafts? Obviously the pins would need to be adjusted but I dont know if the 100gr head is to much for a 250gr shaft.
Thanks in advance.

Without knowing the spine of your arrows no one can answer this question for you. A heavier tip will make your arrow behave as if it had a weaker spine. So if you are shooting relatively stiff arrows for your draw weight/length a heavier tip will bring you more into the center range of your recommended spine. Remember, what little bit you loose in speed will be offset with better penetration and very likely a quieter shooting bow. And I would take the latter two over speed any day for eastern hunting.

Thanks for the reply. Good point on better penetration. I can't imagine the 15gr difference in heads would make that big of a difference on how the shaft reacts. I should probably pick up some 100gr field points and give them a try to get some idea.
