Straight Carbon Arrows

Well, all this talk about tuning problems due to wobbly arrows got me checking my own very carefully with a spin tester. Strange outcomes. With my Beman ICS hunters, only 3 out of 12 are " straight and don' t wobble at the ends. So I broke out some old Beman Hawks. All of them were much straighter than the Beman ICS' s. So I made the switch and refletched them. And the hawks are much cheaper than the ICS' s and easier to pull out of my targets.

Its pretty amazing how most cheaper carbons wobble. Even expensive ones can wobble quite a bit. Most tollerances are from .003 to .006. Good carbons run from .001 to .0015. My dealer lets me spin a bunch of blank shafts before I buy them.
good Luck!

No Len, when I bought them, Larry suggested the Hawks, you suggested the golden tips
. So Kudos to your Shop employee. I bought these hawks from your shop about two seasons ago. And replaced them with ICS' s last season. Now back to the hawks. I am just really surprised the " Cheaper" hawks are so much straighter.

BC: That' s interesting, because I was VERY skeptical about Gold Tips last year and the year before. If you read JeffB' s posts, they were at the bottom of the barrel. This year, however, they' ve improved tremendously - but really only the XTs.
I would mainly recommend ICS Hunters over the Hawks because of weight. It' s a fact, as both JeffB and I stated, that this quality issue of straightness runs in cycles and can vary from batch to batch.
You said that you bought the Hawks from us. Did you also buy the ICS Hunters from us. I don' t remember you buying them. Getting old, you know!

To be honest with ya, you may have not suggested the gold tips. It was right after you got back from your hog trip to florida, and you were talking about the " skinny" carbons penetrating so well.
Your right about the batch I believe. I like the finish of the hawks. I might drop by and pick up some blanks if ya got some.

I bought a dozen GoldTip XTs and they are very straight and really group well for me!
The finished arrow is on the light side at 395 grains......but,they seem to penetrate very well even with a mech. broadhead!
