Default Question about those LONG MOVEABLE sight!!

I know there are some target archers on here, so can you help me out. I know quite a bit about the sport, been at it a while and have allot of the "do it yourself" toys,... but have never "delved" into the target bow end whatsoever, even from a "curious" standpoint. For the second time in 5 years since moving to Rochester I joined a indoor winter league two weeks ago. Same archery shop I shot at the first time, but they only had a 20 yard line the first league two years ago. Well,...this year he changed the league to shooting 1/2 the round at 20yds and 1/2 the round at 24yds(against the wall). I shot late last night and the 7PM group showed up when I was about finished. Some guys had the Sure Shot(?) sights that sit WAY out front of the bow with moveable sight pins. I know most indoor places, and the 3D shoots separate archers into the divisions. Having a single pin and being able to move that pin at different yardages has obvious advantages to me. The fixed pin shooter is struggling with another mental "fine point" with a fixed 20 yard pin in having to concentrate on aiming high when at 24 yds. It has a clear affect on the 2nd half of my round at least!
What other advantages do these sights have? Is there an advantage to the sight being WAY out front? Can someone explain? Thanks!

Twang-

You most likely noticed "Shure-Loc" sight bars, and there are other manufacturers that make similar items.

Other advantages? Well, you mentioned the moveable sight part already. And when you combine that with custom sight tapes that are tailored for you bow, you can dial in yardage for any situation. An absolutely fabulous program for this is www.archersadvantage.com

For anyone who is intent on shooting a lot of target archery outdoors with a sight bar, I consider this almost a must-have computer program.

A sight like this also makes it a snap to switch over to a scope instead of pins if you'd like. There is a removable endpiece that holds either the pin or the scope housing- switching between the two is easy.

Having the pins (or scope) way out in front of the riser will also show more movement resolution of the bow. That is, it will show "shakiness" or your holding instability more as well.

Pins farther out let you focus better on the target and pin combination- if the pins are closer to your eye they are more "out of focus" when looking at a 20yd target. And there is a huge range of pins and scopes to select from that fit on target sight bars. Anything from fiber pins, bulbs, circle hoods, up-pins, drop-pins, cross hairs, all sizes of scopes with a wide range of magnifications....

And sight bars like the upper-end Shure Locs, Toxonics, CBE, HTM, and others are NOT cheap! Easily over the $230 range, and that is not including the pins or scope in that price......

Twang,

The class you are talking about in target is known as "Freestyle Unlimited". This class of archery allows you to shoot all the bells and whistles on your bow, scopes, long stabilizers, V bars. Tha advantage of the moveable sight verses gapping is that you are holding on center at all distances and using magnification if you want. Having the sight extended out further is a bit like shooting a long barreled rifle over a short barreled one it assists in aimming. However, the further you extend the sight the more motion you will detect while holding on. It takes a bit of practice to shoot the scope setup and every class has it own level of accuracy. I shoot both Freestyle and Bowhunter Freestyle(5 pins and a stabilizer limited to 12" from the back of the bow)classes. If you are shooting at 24 yds learn the gap distance above the bullseye and hold on that distance with your 20yd pin. It is easier to hold on a spot than trying to split the distance gap properly with the 20 and 30 yd pins. Bowhunter Freestyle(pin) shooters can shoot right up there with Freestylers there is not a large difference in the scores at the higher competition levels especially at short ranges like 20-25yds.

Hope this helps to answer your questions

Thanks allot guys! Obviously I'm looking for where the edge is these guys have over me. Two years ago my buddie (moved away and not in the league this year) took first, some distance from me who took second,...and I was some distance from the rest of the guys. Back then we shot from a fixed 20yd distance. All the sudden this year I notice that there are at least 6 guys shooting as good with a couple shooting considerably better than me. Of course maybe there are some new guys from the first time around, or some have improve considerably. But as human nature would have it,...I'm looking for an excuse!

I do only shoot 1 pin to eliminate the "clutter". But its quite tricky shooting the 20 yard pin and adding that extra mental step to aim high, and the question that poses in the subconcious part of the game,....like, is that high enough?,...don't forget,...OH maybe not,....NOW!!!....correct NOW at the moment of release!!! Its not so bad adding that extra step for one arrow,...but when you have to do it for 1/2 of the round it seems to greatly increase the odds of it "doing you it". Now that I know the rules, I can just as easily carry an allen wrench in my pocket and take 10 seconds to move the pin down to a pre-marked 24yd location before stepping back!

TWANG,
Another way to look at having the sights way out there is the difference between a rifle and a pistol. The farther the 2 sights are from eachother, the better you can shoot. I don't know about you....but I can shoot my rifle with open sights A LOT better than my pistol with open sights!!!!

Good luck!

Twang,

I won't reset my sights! Get yourself a target and find out where the hold point is above the center of the bull. Drawup to that point and hold on it. When I shoot pins in the field 25yds is a common distance and for my bow I have to hold just on the top of the bull or the 5 to hit dead center. Depending on the speed of your bow that point may vary for you. Its just an aimming point, just like the X ring, so don't let it baffle you.
