Default Sighting In Bow

If you sight your first pin at 20yds, is that good for 1-20yrds or 20-30yds?

It will be good for 1-20 yards. With some of today's scorching arrow speed,a lot of people are using 1st pin at 25. I have mine at 15,30,45. The farthest shot I've ever attempted was a 5x6 elk bull at 47 yards and I got pass-thru using my 45 yard pin. Afew archers claim to shoot successfully at game past 100 yards but I don't see how. Even if they could hit the game animal, there ain't enough energy left for sure, safe kill.

If your pin is dead on at 20 yd, probably it will be good for all hunting distances out to about 25. That's just a general statement, however; they all are unique. Lots of practice and experimentation will give you a clear idea of what your own bow is capable of.

Stalkingbear, you're sure right about them long shots. As for 100 yards, not only is the KE way down by then, it would take a full second for an arrow to arrive at the target even if it could maintain 300 fps all the way there. That's way enough time for the animal to move significantly and result in a lousy hit.

My Black Ice is shooting in the 280's FPS I use one pin it's 3 inch high at 10 and 2 3/4 inchs low at 30 yards, so the pin is set dead on at 26 yards. The Archers Advantage says 1 to 32.2 yards for one pin with a 8 inch kill zone. If your wanting just one pin start at about 25 set your pin and than walk up to 10 shoot a arrow and see how high it is and that one at 30 and see how low it is if it's lower at 30 go back and set your pin at 26 are 27 are so depending how low it is. This way one pin is not going to miss a deer from 10 to 30 yards. If your bow has more than say 8 inch difference from 10 to 30 your not going to be able to do this need two pins 20 and a 30 yard pin.

I would not reccomend having over 3 pins for hunting as a lot of deer have been missed due to "pin confusion".

It totally depends on the speed of your bow. Even shooting 270fps, I'd be eating tag soup if I used my 20yd (actually 24) pin on what I wanted to hit @ 30 (actually 32 yds).

Afew archers claim to shoot successfully at game past 100 yards but I don't see how. Even if they could hit the game animal, there ain't enough energy left for sure, safe kill.
Actually, according to a ballistics calculater I use, there is still plenty of energy left for a kill deer sized animal. Try it here.... :http://home.att.net/~sajackson/ballistics.html
