RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
I gotta get to work!

RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
Agreed, a debate, not argument.
I'll find the info if i can tonight and post it.It was enlightening. I used to be all about lighter arrows and my arrow weight has gone from 370 gr to 430 gr in 3 months. |
RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
So are we a slave to technology or is technology a slave to us?
We advanced the engineering in archery, which in turn gave many of us standards that are above the equipment we own. Hence we upgrade and start the process all over again. I don't want to fight about this but I don't think hunting with a recurve or longbow is ethical to my standards. But did I think this way 10 yrs ago? I really can't recall. |

RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
Dave,
Can you sit on the floor with your legs in front of you and draw back slowly to anchor--if you can't do that you are overbowed or"theres your sign":D I can do it with my setup--just need help getting back up again!:D |
RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
i can sit on the floor,I can sit on a stump and rotate 110 degrees to my right and draw. I can draw in just about any position that you can imagine. I've been shooting a bow sinceI was 6-7 yrs old and hunting archery sinceI was 15 and am now 36. I know how to practice for hunting.

AH HA! BUT CAN YOU PAT YOUR HEAD WHILE RUBBING YOUR STOMACH IN A CIRCLE!????

RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
I think you shoot the heaviest bow you can shoot best. If you can,t shoot 70 lbs don't. I have hunt a lot of years and hunted with a lot of bow hunters. Hunted with recurves, compounds, fast arrow and heavy arrows and base my set up on what I have seen over 45 years on bowhunting. Recurves shoot as heavy as you can, cut on impack broad heads and a heavier arrow works best. A 60lb recurve put out 5 are 10 lb Ke lest than a compound with the same arrow at the same weight. Thats way we have them. the newer recurves that are being made today are not the reurves we had 40 years ago, faster and better made with space age glues and so on. I have a good friend of 40 years that shoots a 60 lb compound with heavier arrow than I shoot, but he gets big bucks every year. I have aways shot 65 to 70 lbs with a little lighter arrows. When start talking about deer we have taken (100's). I always get more pass throughs and have shot through more shoulder blades than he has with pass throughs. What I'm saying is shoot what you want. but you owe it to the game you hunt to be at you best and to make the most ethical kill you can make. I don't want to see as go back 40 years, bowhunters did lose more deer and all you would hear from the people was how some one found a deer dead with a arrow sticking out of it are a gun hunter shot a deer with a arrow inside it and how we bowhunters wound to many deer. That way I always put my name on my hunting arrows, make the best shot I can and shoot fast carbon arrows at 70 lbs. Pass throughs and exit hole kill fast set ups. :)

RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
I thought I'd add a point to this "discussion".;)
I own a 70 lb compound, a 60 lb compound, a 60 lb recurve and a 50 lb longbow. If a deer comes within a certain distance and offers a shot opportunity, I can almost guarantee it's dead if I choose to shoot - with any of these bows. The quickest kill I ever made was with a 45 lb recurve on a mature cow elk. She almost went 20 yards before she fell. Ethics has nothing to do with the weapon. It has to do with not exceeding your limitations (listen to Clint, he knew what he was talking about). The cow elk was at 12 yards. I knew it was dead before I shot. I limit myself differently with each weapon, although I will say that my limits have no real difference with the compounds. At the distance I shoot, both are more than effective at the game I'm shooting at. Now, if I was hunting Asian water buffalo, I'd follow Ashby's advise - at least 800 grains traveling at least 180 fps. If either of those figures fall below those ranges, then his studies show that kill rates go way down. A 400 gr arrow going 300 fps will not reliably work. Notice, he doesn't say anything about draw weight or bow type. It doesn't matter. The bow doesn't kill anything. It's all about the arrow. |
RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
Sure, the arrow does the work. However, you have to use a heavier arrow with a 60# bow to equal the performance of a 70# bow. And say you like to shoot a 500 gr arrow. Well, that 500 gr arrow out of a 70# bow is more efficient. Ashbey lists arrow weights with arrow velocities. the higher DW will give you a higher velocity with a heavier arrow. This is indisputable yet keep being ignored by stating that all you have to do is use a heavier arrow.
Dealing with knowing effective range. There are far too many people thathave no clue what their effective rangeis with a piece of equipment or are willing to take a shot that they know they shouldn't. That's why it's always better to use the highest DW you can handle. You extend your effective range and thereby have less chance of a wounded animal. I'm not sure why people ignore this fact also by stating a certain bow can take anything on the Continent. That's only true if the animal is very close and perfect broadside shots with certain set-ups. Unfortunetly, most people don't wait or get the Outdoor Life pose from a game animal. |
RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
People that don't know their range/limits should NOT be hunting any live animals.
|
RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
Iagree that they shouldn't be out there, or at least should be taught properly how to recognize and shoot within that range. However,I bet you would eliminate about 70 or 80% of the archers out in the woodsif you could enforce that rule.
Out of the people that I've known, and know, personally that hunt many of them have no clue what theirrange/limit is. They go buy what the weapon's effective range would be for someone who knows how to use it under ideal conditions. Instead of realizing their range is far more limited.I guess it's delussions of grandure or maybe some sort ofego thing. |
RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
ORIGINAL: jsasker People that don't know their range/limits should NOT be hunting any live animals. It's a process of setting a limit, shooting at animals and then adjusting that limit accordingly. The weapon is really irrelevant in this. A person can just as easily make a bad choice or even worse, never limit himself with a 70 lb bow as he can with a 60 lb bow. A person who makes good choices is ethical with a 40 lb recurve and a person who makes bad choices or no choices will be unethical with whatever they use. Just look at how many people make unethical choices with high powered rifles. |
RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
just gotta put my .02 in this one, but first off, I am only relaying what my brother has told me and this is in HIS experience on live game not mine and you guys will probably have a million comments and questions that i cant answer to. I know very little about bow hunting, I have shot bows and used to be fairly good at killing milk jug caps at 10 yards. my brother is into bowhunting and i always wanted to get into in so he is helping me. now heres my brothersview on things when we were talking about draw weights...(he only shoots compounds anduses a release)
He used to have a bow with a draw weight of 105 lbs since he has gone down to 92.5 and he is going to go lower he is thinking about 60 to 70. not because its too much for him to draw cause he will draw that bow while talking to me (he doesnt have to stop talking to concentrate on the draw) he is dropping the weight because the bow and arrow combo will blow the deer off its feet and/or pin it to the ground temporarily. The deer will kick and struggle itsself off the arrow and/or get up and haul buggy down thru the woods,he waits the deer out after the shot and has tracked deer over 3 miles that were running dead on their feet. before he went that heavy for competition purposes he shot in the 60 to 70 lb DW class and when he shot deer he would get pass thrus and the deer would just kind of look around walk off and drop within 100 yards of where he shot them. Now i wanted to go up to around 80 lbs DW but if things like this happen I will stay with what i have... around 70 lbs. or less... and yea i can draw 80 lbs would hate to think at 6'2" 225 lbs and handling steel all day that i couldnt do it. So now what is important to me is not only a quick clean kill but also a fast recovery. |
RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
ORIGINAL: daved38 I recently ordered a Guide series huneter bowtech bow from gander mountain. I wanted 70 pound draw but I got a 60 pound. I love the bow and archery season is one week away and I want to use it this season. What do I need to do to change the weight of the bow to 70 pounds and how costly would it be? I ordered a brand new pair of hunting boots from cabelas last year and they sent me the wrong size (because i ordered the wrong size). I gave them a call after telling them the boots were a half a size too large. They wanted me to send back the boots for an exchange... I told them deer weason was in two days and they gladly put the new ones in the mail while i hunted with the ones that were the wrong size. I sent the over sized boots back the day the proper size arived. No extra charge. So my point is give them a call and let them know you want the bow you paid for but hunting season is a week away. I am sure they can work somthing out for ya. Good luck.;) |
RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
Getting back to the post. You can get more pounds by twisting your buss cables up and twisting you string up the same, but stay with it bowtech specs. By doing this you put more pressure on the limbs and also raise the braceheight. Some times you string and buss cable don't stretch the same and this happens. When you buss cables stretchs you nock moves, the string it will not, but will your draw will get a little longer

RE: Ordered bow with wrong draw weight.
just stick with the 60 pound bow.
It'll get the job done with no problems on deer |
