Greg, if you're shooting with a release, keep your finger off the trigger. I have a similar problem and when it gets outa hand I purposely leave my finger off the trigger and hold as long as possible on the X. Then I let down, I don't shoot. Do this a few times until you relax and then try again.

If you have the dreaded TP bad don't expect a miracle cure.
Turc gives some good advice.
I personally would go to the blank bale.
Take your sight off your bow!!!!!!! Stand about 6-8yds in front of a blank target and shoot with your eyes closed totally relaxed. With no thoughts in your mind feel the shot.
You want to feel what the perfect release feels like,as the shot goes off leave your eyes closed a few seconds, feel the follow through.
It can take days, weeks, months to get rid of TP(I've been there).
After shooting blank bale for a while eyes shut, open them (still no sight on the bow) just shoot at the target not worrying where you hit JUST FEEL the shot, burn into your mind what it feels like.Just take your time shoot 1 ARROW AT A TIME don't try to shoot groups.
After you begin to feel comfortable put the sight back on and begin shooting short distances(still one arrow at a time)This is where Turcs info comes in pick your spot and just hold on the target and let down, then the next time hold on the target and let your subconcious mind release the arrow.
It takes time and serious dedication to overcome some severe forms of TP.
If you try to many things at once it will do nothing but get worse.
One sure fire way to get on the right track is to find someone in your area that uses a triggerless BACK TENSION release, learn to shoot one and it will help you (TRUST ME).
Good Luck and take your time.

thanks for input Turc & OHarcher
that's scarry {hold on target} 1st few times I thought bow was leaving .then started to settle down about 1/2 hour later bow felt like it was staying in place havent takeing a shot yet. I do have a x-caliper w/back tension, never tryed it thou. This problem started about 2 years ago. Is this considered BAD TP? Looking for starting point. i will put in the time needed I use to shoot 1 to 2 hours day. think i need to hit the bails again.1 to 10 10 being the badest where am i ?

c4extrem,

Get out that back tension release!! Once you can master that, you'll be amazed at how aiming with that release will help you when you get the trigger release back out. A caution though, you are better off shooting with bt for a couple of months rather than a couple of weeks.

If you go to the truball website, they give some good basic instruction on how to use them. www.truball.com

Good luck!!

Sounds to me that your form of TP IS NOT full blown YET.
Without seeing you actually shoot it's very hard for me to say how bad it is.
Actually sounds as if you have a punching problem. You draw your bow and when the pin gets anywhere near your spot you hit the trigger............Does that sound like what your doing????? Or are you simply just freezing up a little low/high,left/right of the target????
Actually you may want to spend less time shooting. My case of TP began by shooting too much.I would shoot and shoot until I was tired which in turn created terrible habits in my form.Think of it this way....Would you rather shoot 25 quality shots or 75 so so shots? Remember 1 at a time!
Spend some time at the blank bale.Take your time.

Greg, do you shoot competitive. I have seen and had cases of target panic Myself, and I am fairly calm when it comes to aiming and shooting, but it happen's. What my coaches usaully tell me to do, even if Im not having problems with TP but just not shooting well that day, Is as others have stated, take your bow put and arrow in it, go through the motions of shooting, when at full draw keep your finger behind the trigger, put your site on the point you want the arrow to impact, and hold it there, hold it as long as you can hold your bow, when you start to shake like heck, then let down, rest for a second, then do it again about 3-4 times. I think whats happening is brain isn't working with you, probably the best reason for that is because you are thinking about to many things at once.
Also stated before, it is best to do some blind shooting for a while about 5 yards from the target. Go up to the bail or what ever your shooting at, line up your feet like you would normally to shoot, drawback. As you get into anchor, close your eye's then feel the shot. Do that for about 10minutes. Just draw close your eye's and shoot. Don't open your eye's until after full follow through. I would aslo like to know if you are using a backtension style to trip the release. I'll talk about the backtension thing later if you wanna here about it. Good luck.
