Default cable slide questions

I love bow hunting, but do not know a whole lot about the bows i hunt with, so i apologize if this is a very dumb question.

Is the cable slide supposed to slide back and forth on the rod it rests on when you draw back then release the bow string?

I will try and make this as simple as I can without going into a lot of detail seeing you are new to our sport.
