What is the major difference between 100gr and 125 gr. I`ve always shot 125gr with my aluminum arrows but this yr I switched to carbon and a buddy of mine told me to use 100gr but couldn`t give me a reason why. how much does it change your shot placement?

Thanks,
Mike

It dosen't change your POI that much at 20 yards. I belive he was telling you that to help speed up your arrow. The difference between 100 and 125 could be substantil thats 1/5 less weight think about it. I use 85 gr. myself.

One thing that you might want to remember when making the tip lighter, is that your FOC will decrease. Unfortunately, some archers will decrease their tip weight to increase speed. With the decrease in tip weight along with the decrease in FOC, makes a less forgiving faster arrow, with no tangible results at 20 yards, which is close to the normal shot distance in bow hunting. I like to run my hunting arrows around 12-13% foc, who cares what the speed is. 5 fps will not make a difference. I started running a higher foc on my 3-d arrows this year and found that my x-counts went up on my short game with a more stable arrow. Also remember that with a lighter tip, your pile weight will decrease and your arrow spine will be stiffer. You might want to do a little more homework before you take the plunge. Good luck.

WOW. I guess I do need to do some homework on this subject. Time to hit the book store tonight and see if I can find any good books. I`m totally lost. Atleast my son and I both have alot to learn on this subject.

An object will fly heavy end forward. So, for the sake of argument, let's say the nock end of your arrow is heavier than the point end. When you shot it, the arrow would flip over and fly nock end first. So, if your FOC is too low, the fletching is having to work harder at stabilizing the arrow so it doesn't flip over, make sense?

Switching from 100 to 125 gr. heads will slow you down about....3 fps, but will increase your KE by, oh, maybe 1 or 2 foot pounds. If your FOC is good, between 10 and 14%, and your groups are good, I wouldn't mess w/ it. Oh, it will also change the spine of your arrow somewhat too.

I too went from an aluminum XX75 with a 125gr tip to a new carbon arrow with a 100gr tip. It is probably due to the carbon arrow being way lighter in grains/inch than the aluminum. Plus with a 125gr tip, the FOC (front of center) would be way high, causing the arrow to nose dive.
