I have a queston,maybe you guys can help me? My wife shoots a 24" arrow at 43# her arrow weight is 355 gr. The arrows are ACCs 3-18/560 with a 100gr tip.I was going to change her to a lighter arrow, but will I be giving up too much KE.She hunts deer with me and tookher first buck this year.Her bow is a hoyt V-tek.Thank you. bukjuice, if you know how fast your wife's bow is there's a simple calculation to determine K.E. the wt. of the arrow times the velocity times velocity divided by 450240. that will give you the foot lbs of K.E. the arrow has leaving the bow. I want to say stay above 26ft lbs of K.E. It also depends on the type of broadhead she's using a cut on contact like the magnus stinger will be heads above mechanicals in which you would need closer to 40 ft lbs of K.E. my friends boy shoots a micro midas set at 40 lbs and about 310 gr. arrows which works out to be 26.18 ft lbs of K.E. and he had a complete passthru on a decent sized iowa buck. hope that helps

KE isn't the only thing, you also have to consider momentum as well. With that set up I would actually be looking at heavier arrows rather than lighter. At least I would. I would be looking at a 400 grn arrow and two blade cut to tip head for that light of a set up on deer. You are probably getting energy equal to a normal person shooting a recurve or long bow with that set up.

i would stay with the arrow but go to a lighter broadhead like the muzzy 75gr for instance trust me on this one

My first question is why do you want to change to a lighter arrow? If she is currently shooting ACC's and they are spined right for her bow you are not going to find a better arrow period. Switching to a lighter broad head will do nothing but change the spine and FOC of your arrow. You will not notice a difference in speed. Maybe on a chrono, but not in actual shooting, especially with a set up that lite.

If you are looking for speed I wouldn't bother too much because with that set up you are not going to see much anyway. No matter what you do it will still be slow in comparison to the average set up. Those are a bit stiff for that set up, if you could find some that closer matched they might be a bit lighter. I don't think being a bit stiff will hurt anything though, just adds more weight.

I come up with 327 for 3-18's at 24 inches with 4 inch vanes and a 100 grn tip. You could use easton jazz arrows with feathers and be around 350 grns and by three times the arrows. You could drop your tip weight and switch to feathers, that would cut your weight down if that is really what you want. I highly doubt you will notice a difference without a chrono though. And if you are looking for pass thrus on deer I would be looking at heavier arrows with cut to tip heads.

Just my opinion, but I shoot a lighter set up. Not that light, but light enough that it is a concern for me.

Dead deer speaks loudly in favor of leaving it alone. It's obviously working for her. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If penetration is a problem, I certainly wouldn't recommend going lighter, either in broadhead weight or arrow weight. I'd switch to a cut on contact broadhead like the Magnus Stinger or Steel Force.
