Soft hides are tanned the same as hides for taxidermy. They are not softened by chemicals, but must be broken. This is done either by hand, with a very large tumbler. or a staking machine. It can be done at home, but it's NOT fun and never turns out like a professionally prepared hide.

When I want something to be soft,I send it the tannery and get them to dry tan it.Its a lot of work trying to break it yourself, but it can be done.
