30-06 Rem. 180 gr. soft point or pointed soft point
I have a question and did not know which forum to go to. I'm not a reloader, but figured you guys could help me. I have been shooting the 180 gr. soft pt. for years and wondering should I go to the pointed soft pt.? What is the advantage?

Pointed SP will have a little higher ballistic coefficient (BC) this means its more areodynamic...which means it will retain its speed and energy a little better. So they will hit the target a little harder but they may take a little longer to expand. If it aint broke don't fix it.

Thanks for the replies. I have had my 30-06 for years and usually get a chance to hunt white tail. The 180-gr. soft point really drops them. I am disabled and may have a chance to go out west and hunt Mule deer, antelope, and/or Elk. I have heard that the shots may be up to 300 yards. I just put a new scope on my rifle so I will need to sight it in. If I change to the pointed soft point Corelokt, will it be better for the longer shots and still be good for the 100 yard or less shots for white tail?

well in my opinion other guys may disagree. the soft point is good for brushy wood cover where u could have a richochet. the soft point is better there. but if your talking shots out to 300 yds i would have to say go with the pointed soft point. hope it helps.

I'm from the "west"......and yes...shots are often 300 yards or more. Here in Utah, we have areas where you shoot across canyons. A buddy of mine recently dropped a cow elk with his .338 at a distance that I would not dream shooting my '06. I won't even tell you how far it was or I'll have too many people replying to this thread...saying that the shot was "too far" to take. Two years ago...I shot a nice 6x6 bull elk at over 350 yards. I have also killed many deer at over that range. But the vast majority of my elk have been taken at 40 to 80 yards since we hunt in thick timber. Just make sure you have a good shot. I use a Remington 700 in 30-06 with 180 grain load as well. (for elk) For deer I use 150 or 165 grain. Most people in Utah hunting Mule deer seem to go with 150 to 165. When I hunt the timber....close range...I don't usually care....but then I'm more likely to use the higher grain.

A twig the size of a pencil will make a 50 cal. richoet,so it doesn,t matter in that respect. I would stay with what which one he likes the best. Both work fine enought to kill anything. How many deer does one shoot in his life time anyways? its not like changing bullet goin out to kill 100 squirrels a day.To many people make such a big federal case about bullets. If they worked before they will work now. vangunsmith
