I just hang rack and skull in tree and forget about it till following year .... by then, it's usually bleached white and ready to apply whatever you want on it.

I tried this once with the skull of a black bear that I shot in northern Montana. I put the skull on top of an ant mound, put a 5 gallon bucket over the skull, and put a large rock on top of the bucket.

That night, the neighbors Husky knocked the bucket over and chewed up most of the skull.
