How do i preserve a squirrel tail correctly? I've never done anything with taxidermy before.

I usually just salt mine, but I use them for fly tying not display.

I have a few years worth hanging on the wall at home.... While skinning the squirrel I pull the skin all the way clean off the tail bone. Then I cut the Tail off the rest of the skin. Then I cut a little slit in the top of the tail, slide a shoe string through it, and let it hang there with the rest of them. They quickly dry out, I dunno if that is the proper way, but they hang in my gun room. DOn'ts smell or rot. And some are about 10 years old.

Thanks for the info. I ended up just pouring a bunch of salt down the tail after I took the bone out. It's been a couple months and it's not stinking or rotten yet.

Borax will work as good or better than salt, next time.

Borax can be found with the laundry detergent at the grocery store
