What should I expect to pay for a deer hide?
#1
Ive seen a few deer hides in pictures and stuff hanging on walls and stuff and I was thinking it might be kinda neat to have done to my next deer if the hide looked good but im curious what should I expect to pay for something like that? Id figure under $100 but ive never actually had any sort of professional mounting done so I dont know? And is there anything special I should do with the skin once I skin the deer? Thanks, sean

You could make a bra out of it,LOL.
I charge $65 to $75 for tanning a full back hide, soon to go up since transportation is going up, iam sure iam going to get hit with an increase in shippng back and forth to the tannery.
Remove all the meat and fat, lay flat on a surface(Wood Crates work well) and put a coat of salt over it on the flesh side, then the next day shake the wet salt off and pour another coat over it again, hang to dry in the shade and away from humidity and let it dry cardboard hard. Then send it to be tanned.
or you can take it to the taxidermist frozen and he will prepare it for a modest price.
Allow 4 to 6 months to get the skin back from any tannery.
Just the facts.

I got one a few years ago for about 92 bucks. I got it w/ the hair on and it took him about 4 months. He sent it out to a tannery and I think it looks great.

im definatly wanting to keep the fur on it and have it turn out soft kinda like a blanket or something so does that make a difference of how to prep it and all?

No difference just go by what I told you, have being doing it for 40 YRS Plus.
Most tanneries do not deal with the public directly ,they only work for taxidermists and fur traders.
but go to taxidermy.net/forums and click on suppliers and you will get a list of tanneries, you then can contact them and see if they want to take just 1 skin ???
