"Old dog...new tricks?"
Hello,
I recently brought home a 4.5 year old German shorthaired pointer from the pound. He seems to be a great dog with quite a bit of natural hunting instinct. I was wondering where to begin training this dog in the field? He does have a good natural point, but he more than likely has never seen a pheasant before? I have taken him out to run, and shot over him. He's not gun or water shy and can run all day.
I want to hunt him, but I don't have any other dogs that he may learn from. Any ideas on where to begin in the back yard?
Never too late I hope.
Thank You

Mass.Hunter,
There are lots of books that can help you get started then, try getting some quail, pigeons or pheasant to get him used to birds. Try to find a pointing dog club in your area & see if there are any trainers or if some one can help you out. Pound dogs are eager to please they seem to know they got a second chance. Be Flexible keep it fun & give lots of praise, you should be able to have him ready for next season.
